Job description

Job Description:
This position performs communications-related duties in support of the Library's external and internal relations with a focus on the e-newsletter, social media, and the news blog. This is a library union position, hybrid eligible.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
  • Produces and posts library-specific digital content in order to engage the broader Brown community, donors to the Library, and other local and global stakeholders
  • Contributes to an annual digital content plan developed by the Director of Library Communications and Public Programs that is responsive to the Library and Brown's strategic goals and messaging, visual identity, and editorial and accessibility guidelines, updating throughout the year as needed
  • Contributes to determination of key performance indicators (KPIs) and benchmarks for digital content ahead of the spring and fall semesters; monitors and evaluates success of content monthly based on KPIs, in-app analytics, and qualitative data; and suggests updates to digital content plan based on these measurements on an as needed basis
  • Researches and creates content about a variety of notable library activities in accordance with the digital content plan
  • Writes content spanning short social media posts to long-form articles for the e-newsletter and news blog
  • Collaborates on and maintains a monthly social media engagement calendar
  • Monitors social media conversations/mentions weekly and responds, triaging and consulting as necessary, according to rules of engagement established with the Director of Communications and Public Programs
  • Reports quarterly and on an ad hoc basis about digital content activity and engagement to supervisor and/or library administration
  • Brings e-newsletter, social media, and news blog content created occasionally by library staff from draft to final stage by copyediting and providing feedback as needed
  • Posts content to social media directly or using Later.com
  • Collaborates with the Library's Publications and Design Specialist on branding and design for digital publicity campaigns and other content as appropriate
  • Uses Adobe Express (or other Adobe Creative Cloud tools) to create assets used in e-newsletter, social media, and news blog content
  • Writes for and designs the e-newsletter using Campaign Monitor templates
  • Keeps social media and Campaign Monitor accounts up-to-date, including profile information, subscription lists, icons, and banners
  • Attends, in person, the quarterly Brown Communicators meetings
  • Maintains current knowledge of digital media best practices and technologies

Supervisor: Director of Library Communications and Public Programs
Works independently under general direction; makes independent judgments and decisions within the scope of Library and University policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent level of education and/or experience (e.g., associates degree plus two years of relevant experience, or four years of relevant experience)
  • Two years demonstrated success in a communications role
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills across platforms and audiences
  • Demonstrated experience creating successful content on digital platforms including social media and those suitable for long-form writing such as media outlets, e-newsletters, and blogs
  • Competent computer skills including ability to use standard computer software packages including Google Suite applications and Zoom
  • Knowledge of graphic design software such as Adobe Express
  • Ability to interact favorably with co-workers, staff, students, faculty, and contacts external to the University
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across multiple departments
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills
  • Ability to interpret complex verbal and written instructions and to use judgment within established procedures
  • May be required to work evenings and/or weekends.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new systems and software as needed
  • Ability to take accurate notes
