What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a blockchain developer, and why are they important?

A Blockchain Developer should possess strong programming skills (such as in Solidity, JavaScript, or Python), a solid understanding of cryptography, and experience with distributed ledger technologies, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with blockchain platforms (like Ethereum or Hyperledger), smart contract development, and relevant certifications (such as Certified Blockchain Developer) are highly beneficial. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective collaboration are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies enable developers to build secure, reliable, and innovative blockchain solutions that meet complex business and technical requirements.

What does a blockchain developer do?

A blockchain is a digital, public transaction record or digital ledger. People usually associate it with the cryptocurrency Bitcoin, but blockchain technology can also record digital transactions with other cryptocurrencies, data, or information. Unlike other forms of finance, cryptocurrencies that rely on the blockchain are decentralized, so people can access Bitcoin and other digital currencies without going to a bank. Computer experts and cryptographers are developing additional ways to use blockchain technology, such as for trade and healthcare records.

How much are blockchain developers paid?

Blockchain developers typically earn between $80,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and skill level. Senior developers with expertise in smart contracts, cryptography, and blockchain platforms can earn higher salaries, especially in competitive markets or with specialized certifications.

What is the difference between Blockchain Developer vs Blockchain Engineer?

What is a blockchain developer?

Blockchain Developers are professionals who design, build, and maintain decentralized applications and smart contracts using blockchain technology. They work with various blockchain platforms like Ethereum, Hyperledger, or Solana to create secure and transparent systems for industries such as finance, supply chain, and healthcare. Their responsibilities include developing protocols, writing code for smart contracts, and ensuring the security and integrity of blockchain networks.

What are some common challenges blockchain developers face when integrating blockchain solutions with existing enterprise systems?

Blockchain Developers often encounter challenges when integrating blockchain solutions with legacy enterprise systems, such as ensuring interoperability between different technologies, managing data consistency, and addressing scalability concerns. Additionally, developers must navigate security protocols and compliance requirements unique to blockchain while collaborating closely with IT, security, and business teams. Adapting smart contracts to fit existing workflows and ensuring seamless user experiences require both technical expertise and effective communication across departments.

Job description

Role Summary
Terabase Energy is seeking an RTDS Engineer to support the delivery of real-time Hardware-in-the-Loop simulation solutions for utility-scale solar, BESS, and hybrid renewable energy projects.
This role will be primarily responsible for developing, configuring, validating, and maintaining project-specific RTDS and RSCAD models used for plant controller, SCADA, EMS, inverter, and substation control validation. The RTDS Engineer will work closely with Controls Engineering, SCADA Engineering, Project Engineering, Modeling & Validation, Commissioning, and customer-facing teams to ensure HIL simulations are ready for internal testing, FAT, customer witness testing, and field issue replication.
The ideal candidate has 5+ years of hands-on experience with PSCAD, RSCAD, RTDS modeling, and HIL setup for project-specific power plant validation.
Key Responsibilities
RTDS / RSCAD Modeling
โ€ข Develop and configure project-specific RTDS and RSCAD models for utility-scale solar, BESS, and hybrid power plants.
โ€ข Translate electrical one-lines, control narratives, interconnection requirements, equipment data, and project specifications into real-time simulation models.
โ€ข Build and validate plant-level models for active power, reactive power, voltage control, frequency response, ramp-rate control, curtailment, and grid support functions.
โ€ข Develop and maintain reusable RSCAD model libraries, templates, and project standards.
PSCAD and Dynamic Modeling
โ€ข Develop, review, and validate PSCAD models to support project-specific studies, controls validation, and grid compliance requirements.
โ€ข Support model alignment between PSCAD and RTDS/RSCAD environments.
โ€ข Work with inverter OEMs, BESS OEMs, and internal engineering teams to validate control behavior and model assumptions.
โ€ข Support testing related to inverter-based resource performance, plant controller behavior, and interconnection compliance.
HIL Setup and Project Delivery
โ€ข Set up project-specific Hardware-in-the-Loop environments using RTDS and physical control hardware.
โ€ข Integrate PPCs, EMS controllers, RTACs, relays, gateways, SCADA servers, network switches, firewalls, and communication interfaces into the HIL environment.
โ€ข Configure I/O mapping, signal routing, protocol interfaces, and controller communication paths.
โ€ข Support FAT, eFAT, customer witness testing, internal validation, and project readiness reviews.
โ€ข Ensure HIL environments are delivered on schedule to support project milestones.
Testing, Validation, and Troubleshooting
โ€ข Develop and execute HIL test plans, procedures, acceptance criteria, and validation reports.
โ€ข Validate controls performance under normal operating conditions, grid disturbances, curtailment scenarios, plant trips, communication failures, and recovery events.
โ€ข Troubleshoot model, controller, communication, network, and simulation issues during HIL setup and testing.
โ€ข Replicate field issues in the HIL environment to support commissioning, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions.
โ€ข Document test results, model assumptions, issue logs, lessons learned, and final validation outcomes.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
โ€ข Partner with Controls Engineering, SCADA Engineering, Project Engineering, Commissioning, IT/OT, and Product teams to align HIL setup with project needs.
โ€ข Support customer-facing technical discussions related to HIL testing, plant controller validation, and model behavior.
โ€ข Work with vendors and OEMs to obtain model data, controller interfaces, firmware details, and communication requirements.
โ€ข Contribute to Terabase's standard HIL delivery process, test automation roadmap, and quality improvement initiatives.
