Job description

Technical Expert – Drill Operations

ASARCO | Corporate Training

Position Overview:

The Technical Expert – Drill Operations leads the safe, compliant, and performance-driven training and development of blasthole drill operators across ASARCO's open pit operations, including Ray Mine (Kearny, AZ), Mission Mine (Sahuarita, AZ), and Silverbell Mine (Marana, AZ). As subject matter expert for Atlas Copco Pit Viper and Sandvik blasthole drill operations, this role trains and mentors new and experienced operators in safe operating techniques, drill setup and leveling, hole placement and pattern accuracy, mast and tower handling, rotary and pulldown control, bit and drill string management, equipment care, and production best practices — developing skilled operators who maximize productivity and equipment performance while maintaining the highest standards of safety and environmental compliance.

The Technical Expert – Drill Operations partners closely with Mine Operations (Drilling and Blasting), Dispatch, Technical Services, Maintenance, and leadership teams at each site to improve operator capability, reduce equipment wear, optimize drilling efficiency and pattern conformance, and support achievement of operational KPI targets.

This position ensures all training activities are conducted in compliance with ASARCO policies, procedures, operating standards, and all applicable MSHA, state, and federal health, safety, and environmental regulations.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience operating Atlas Copco Pit Viper and/or Sandvik blasthole drills (or comparable large-diameter rotary blasthole drills) in an open pit mining environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in drill pattern execution, hole placement and depth accuracy, drill string and bit management, leveling and tramming, and production optimization on large rotary blasthole drills.
  • Strong understanding of open pit mining operations; Modular Dispatch and/or Caterpillar MineStar and Terrain dispatch and grade control systems; and production targets.
  • MSHA certification and strong knowledge of MSHA regulations related to surface mining operations.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an ATF Employee Possessor permit.
  • Strong communication, leadership, mentoring, and coaching skills with the ability to work effectively across Operations, Maintenance, Dispatch, and Technical Services teams.
  • Proficient working knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Valid driver’s license with the ability to operate company vehicles on mine property.
  • High school diploma or GED.
