Job description

As a Machine Learning Engineer, you will play a key role in integrating laboratory automation into computational pipelines, delivering robust, user-friendly solutions that accelerate scientific innovation. You’ll contribute to projects ranging from automation UX enhancement and anomaly detection to predictive maintenance and Physical AI. Initially, you’ll join a pioneering project to develop an AI-powered lab assistant capable of designing and executing automated experiments on Tecan liquid handling robots.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and encapsulate automation interfaces for liquid handlers and detection instruments using modern programming languages and frameworks (e.g., Python).
  • Develop and support SDKs (Python, C#, Go) for programmatic access by AI, data science, and scientific users.
  • Ensure APIs and integration layers are robust, well-documented, and optimized for developer experience.
  • Design translation layers between experimental workflows and Tecan’s proprietary scripting language for seamless robot motion planning.
  • Work with protocol datasets and leverage large language models or code-generation models to produce reliable and safe automation scripts.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to deliver robust, user-friendly solutions for laboratory automation, including building AI algorithms and features to improve product UX.
Background
  • Currently pursuing or completed a B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Robotics, AI/ML, or a related field.
  • Strong foundation in Python programming.
  • Comfortable working with transformer-based models (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.).
  • Familiarity with robotics control, automation, or motion planning; interest in laboratory automation and biotech.
  • Experience with laboratory automation systems is a plus.
  • Knowledge of C++ and/or C# and understanding of lab protocols is nice to have.
  • English required; German is a plus.
  • Strong team player with excellent communication and technical presentation skills.
  • Brings passion and talent to the role, with the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and iterate quickly.
