Biomedical Research Associate information

What is a biomedical research associate?

Biomedical Research Associates are professionals who support scientific studies related to health and medicine. They typically work in laboratories, universities, or pharmaceutical companies, assisting with the design, execution, and analysis of experiments. Their duties may include collecting data, running tests, maintaining lab equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety and ethical standards. Biomedical Research Associates play a crucial role in advancing medical knowledge and developing new treatments or therapies. They often collaborate with scientists, clinicians, and other researchers to achieve research objectives.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a biomedical research associate?

A Biomedical Research Associate typically needs a background in biological sciences, research methodology, and data analysis, often demonstrated through a relevant degree such as a BSc or MSc. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, statistical software (like SPSS or R), and compliance with research regulations (such as IRB protocols) is crucial. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and strong teamwork and communication skills help individuals excel in collaborative and data-driven environments. These abilities are essential for ensuring accurate, ethical, and impactful research outcomes in biomedical studies.

What challenges do biomedical research associates face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Biomedical Research Associates often collaborate with professionals from diverse backgrounds, such as clinicians, statisticians, and engineers. One common challenge is bridging communication gaps and aligning different perspectives to achieve shared research goals. Effective teamwork requires flexibility, strong communication skills, and the ability to understand and integrate feedback from various disciplines. Navigating these dynamics can be demanding but also leads to innovative research outcomes and valuable professional growth.

What is the difference between Biomedical Research Associate vs Laboratory Technician?

AspectBiomedical Research AssociateLaboratory Technician
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in life sciences, relevant research experienceAssociate's degree or certification in laboratory sciences
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, clinical settings, academic institutionsMedical labs, research facilities, hospitals
Employer & Industry UsageUniversities, biotech companies, research institutesHospitals, diagnostic labs, pharmaceutical companies
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for research roles requiring analytical skillsCompared for technical support roles in labs

The Biomedical Research Associate typically holds a bachelor's or master's degree and engages in designing experiments, analyzing data, and supporting research projects. Laboratory Technicians usually have an associate's degree and focus on performing routine tests, maintaining equipment, and supporting lab operations. While both roles work in laboratory settings, the Biomedical Research Associate is more involved in research design and analysis, whereas the Laboratory Technician handles technical tasks and sample processing.

area of biomedical informatics, multi-omic integratoin analytics and machine learning. In this role you will produce highly impactful biomedical informatics research that presents new innovations in methods and novel findings that inform disease etiology. The exposome is a promising and emerging modality to explain disease variation (papers in press in Nature Medicine) that impacts humans on all levels: from the single cell to populations, providing a rich substrate to do novel work. Candidates with experience in developing approaches to research and analyze large multi-modal datasets and who wish to deploy the next generation of exposome AI models are highly encouraged to apply. This position comes with data ready to analyze, and you can focus on developing research findings and writing papers from day 1.
Responsibilities include:
  • Research and translate exposome data science into real-world clinical applications.
  • Independently research and design exposome foundation models for disease physiology.
  • Characterize how an individual's exposome drives variation in response to pharmaceutical intervention.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across Harvard (HSPH, HMS) and at partner universities to enhance data collection, cleaning, and integration processes, ensuring data accuracy and consistency.
  • Produce engineering outputs, including databases, application programming interfaces, apps.
  • Produce high-impact peer-reviewed articles, and presentations for academic and non-academic audiences.

  • Experience with exposome or environmental data, multiomics integration, and exposure-wide association studies (ExWAS) and GIS preferred

Special Instructions
Required documents:
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Statement of Research for PhD work
  • Cover Letter describing your interest in the lab and initial ideas for new research directions or projects you could undertake in the lab.
  • Note with names and contact information for three people who have agreed to serve as your reference

Please submit application documents through the ARIeS portal.Selected candidates will be invited for in-person interviews involving a research presentation on past work.
