Lead Medium Voltage Switchgear & UPS Field EngineerPosition Overview

We are seeking an experienced Lead Medium Voltage Switchgear & UPS Field Engineer to lead the commissioning, startup, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and emergency service of critical power systems at customer sites. This position requires a strong technical background in medium-voltage electrical power systems (1kV and above preferred), switchgear, UPS systems, and associated critical-power equipment.

The Lead Field Engineer will serve as a technical leader in the field, overseeing complex testing and commissioning activities, coordinating with customers and internal teams, mentoring field personnel, and ensuring work is completed safely, accurately, and in accordance with project specifications, OEM requirements, and applicable electrical standards.

The position is home-based with primarily regional travel throughout the Atlanta, GA area, with occasional national travel as required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and oversee field commissioning, startup, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and emergency response for medium-voltage and critical-power electrical systems.
  • Commission and test medium-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, protective devices, UPS systems, batteries, PDUs, STS systems, transformers, and related power distribution equipment.
  • Lead commissioning-focused design reviews and identify potential electrical, controls, safety, and constructability issues prior to field installation.
  • Develop, review, and execute detailed test procedures, commissioning plans, test scripts, and test reports.
  • Lead on-site testing and commissioning activities while ensuring compliance with project requirements, OEM specifications, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Perform electrical testing, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, equipment startup, emergency service, and field modifications.
  • Utilize electrical test equipment to diagnose system problems and verify equipment performance.
  • Coordinate with engineering, technical support, project management, manufacturers, contractors, and customers to resolve complex equipment and operational issues.
  • Develop and review Methods of Procedure (MOPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs) for critical-power systems.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to field engineers, technicians, and service personnel.
  • Serve as the senior technical resource on difficult field issues and provide recommendations for corrective action.
  • Communicate directly with customers regarding equipment condition, troubleshooting findings, system performance, and recommended repairs or improvements.
  • Complete detailed Field Service Reports and commissioning documentation accurately and promptly.
  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, system performance, safety, and customer uptime.
  • Participate in OEM and manufacturer training programs as needed.
  • Maintain a high level of technical proficiency with evolving medium-voltage and critical-power technologies.
  • Follow all applicable safety requirements, including NFPA 70E, OSHA, and company electrical safety procedures.
  • Be available for occasional nights, weekends, and on-call emergency support.
Required Qualifications
  • 3+ years of relevant electrical field service, commissioning, testing, or maintenance experience preferred.
  • Significant hands-on experience with medium-voltage electrical systems rated 1kV or higher; 5kV–35kV experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with medium-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relays, transformers, and electrical distribution systems.
  • Strong experience with UPS systems and critical-power equipment, including batteries, PDUs, STSs, and associated power electronics.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot complex electrical and power-system issues.
  • Experience performing electrical testing using appropriate diagnostic and commissioning equipment.
  • Strong understanding of electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, control circuits, and equipment specifications.
  • Experience leading or overseeing commissioning and startup activities.
  • Knowledge of applicable electrical codes and standards, including NEC/NFPA 70 and NFPA 70E.
  • Strong verbal, written, organizational, and customer-service skills.
  • Ability to work independently while effectively leading field teams and coordinating with multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound technical decisions in the field.
  • Ability to work in demanding mission-critical environments while maintaining a high level of professionalism and safety.
  • Ability to bend, climb, stand for extended periods, and lift up to 100 lbs when required.
  • Willingness to travel extensively and work nights, weekends, and emergency call-outs when necessary.
  • Clean driving record and valid driver's license.
Preferred Experience
  • OEM factory training or hands-on experience with Vertiv/Liebert, Schneider Electric/APC/MGE, Eaton/Powerware/PDI, or other major UPS and critical-power manufacturers.
  • Experience with medium-voltage switchgear manufacturers such as ABB, Eaton, Schneider Electric, Siemens, GE, or Square D.
  • Experience testing and troubleshooting protective relays and circuit breakers.
  • Experience with electrical commissioning and testing equipment such as Megger, Doble, Omicron, Fluke, or equivalent.
  • Experience with relay testing, insulation resistance testing, hi-pot testing, contact resistance testing, transformer testing, and other electrical acceptance tests.
  • Experience working in data centers, mission-critical facilities, healthcare, industrial plants, utility facilities, or other high-availability environments.
  • Prior experience with third-party UPS, switchgear, or electrical service providers.
  • Technical degree or formal electrical/electronics training.
  • Military experience in electrical or power-generation systems is highly valued, including Navy EMN/ETN, Army Power Generation, Air Force Power Production, Coast Guard electrical specialties, or similar backgrounds.
Leadership Expectations

As the Lead Field Engineer, this individual will be expected to:

  • Serve as the senior technical authority during complex field assignments.
  • Lead and mentor junior engineers and technicians.
  • Establish testing and troubleshooting approaches for challenging electrical systems.
  • Review field documentation and test results for accuracy and completeness.
  • Interface confidently with customers, contractors, OEM representatives, and engineering teams.
  • Identify potential risks before they affect project schedules, equipment reliability, or customer operations.
  • Promote a strong culture of electrical safety, quality, accountability, and technical excellence.
Work Environment & Travel
  • Home-based position.
  • National travel of 14 days on, 2-3 days off. 
  • Emergency response and after-hours support may occasionally be required.
  • Work may take place in operating electrical rooms, data centers, industrial facilities, construction environments, and other mission-critical facilities.
