How much do biomedical engineering research jobs pay per year?
What is biomedical engineering research?
A Biomedical Engineering Research job involves investigating and developing medical technologies, devices, and treatments to improve healthcare. Professionals in this field work on projects such as medical imaging, biomaterials, prosthetics, and tissue engineering. They collaborate with scientists, engineers, and medical professionals to test and refine innovations. Research tasks may include laboratory experiments, data analysis, and prototype development. The goal is to advance medical knowledge and create practical solutions for clinical applications.
What does someone in biomedical engineering research do?
A typical day in Biomedical Engineering Research can involve designing experiments, analyzing biological or medical data, and developing prototypes of medical devices or technologies. Professionals in this role often collaborate with clinicians, biologists, and other engineers to translate medical needs into technical solutions. Responsibilities may also include writing research reports, documenting results for regulatory compliance, and presenting findings at team meetings or conferences. The role is dynamic and multidisciplinary, offering the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge science and technology that directly impacts patient care and treatment advancements.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in biomedical engineering research?
To thrive in Biomedical Engineering Research, you generally need a solid background in engineering principles, biology, and applied mathematics, often supported by a relevant bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree. Experience with laboratory equipment, data analysis software (such as MATLAB or Python), and knowledge of regulatory standards like FDA or ISO are often required. Strong analytical thinking, creativity, and effective communication skills help researchers tackle complex challenges and collaborate across disciplines. These competencies enable professionals to develop innovative medical technologies and solutions that meet safety and efficacy standards in a highly regulated field.

Job description
Emory University is a leading research university that fosters excellence and attracts world-class talent to innovate today and prepare leaders for the future. We welcome candidates who can contribute to the excellence of our academic community.
Postdoctoral research fellow - Human movement disorders electrophysiology and neural engineering
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher at the intersection of neuroscience, machine learning, and clinical neural engineering to join a collaborative team developing the next generation of intelligent deep brain stimulation (DBS) systems for movement disorders.
Dr. Miocinovic is a movement disorders neurologist and a biomedical engineer with expertise in translational and clinical electrophysiology. Her laboratory at Emory University focuses on brain circuits involved in motor and cognitive behaviors in Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders. We investigate how to treat these disorders by modulating neural activity, primarily with DBS, and work on developing next-generation neuromodulation approaches. The methods used in the lab include intracranial recordings during DBS surgeries and non-invasive (EEG, EMG, kinematic) recordings in the clinic. These approaches are enhanced by advanced imaging techniques, biophysical computational modeling, quantitative symptom monitoring, behavioral tasks, and machine learning.
A postdoctoral fellow would spearhead a project to develop automated DBS programming platform using electrophysiologic signals recorded in the operating room and tested in the clinic and at home. The project is a close collaboration with Dr. Matthew Gombolay at Georgia Tech’s School of Computing, and involves real-time deployment of machine learning algorithms.
This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in translational neural engineering. We offer cutting-edge scientific projects, attentive mentoring and multi-disciplinary collaborations in a world-class research environment at Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology.
