Job description


The intern will support FamilySearch as they work with the BYU Record Linking Lab (RLL). The Record Linking Lab researches innovative ways to increase the volume and improve the quality of data in Family Tree via automation, data analysis and prioritization of work for managed workforces. The intern will primarily work with a Software Engineering Lead at FamilySearch as well as the BYU Professor leading the lab and several BYU students working at the lab. The primary needs are to improve the quality of data modified by the lab and help manage the many projects the lab is working on that affect FamilySearch. Expected to be on campus at BYU Provo at least 1-2 days per week to collaborate with the team.
Responsibilities
  • Execute automated and manual test cases for data changes made by the RLL on FamilySearch
  • Identify patterns in data, discovering clear, reproducible defects and tracking them through resolution
  • Help keep project information up to date, tracking completion of multiple different projects
  • Data analysis before, during and after project execution to aid in making good decisions
  • Help prepare and maintain project documentation, status updates, and meeting notes as directed

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience) or within one year of your graduation date
  • Interest and aptitude at helping manage projects
  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to problem solving, willing to dig into data and look at individual cases to identify patterns
  • Family history interest, aptitude and experience desirable, especially around attaching record sources and merging duplicate people
  • Basic understanding of software development concepts and the software lifecycle
  • Familiarity with programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, etc.)
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
