The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (UW SMPH) is recruiting an exceptional board certified or board eligible otolaryngologist to join the Department as a Comprehensive Otolaryngologist. This role offers an exceptional opportunity for individuals committed to clinical excellence, academic advancement, and collaborative patient care. We are looking for applicants with early career interest or a track record in one of more of the following areas: surgical education, mentorship, quality improvement, multidisciplinary complex care, regional clinical outreach, or global outreach.

This position involves joining a burgeoning Division of Comprehensive Otolaryngology with tremendous opportunities for growth clinically and in all arms of the academic mission.

The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck surgery is led by Department Chair, Dr. Sandra Lin. Dr. David Upton leads the Division of Comprehensive Otolaryngology.

Clinical resources and opportunities include:

Primary practice locations will include the state-of-the art UW Health Eastpark Medical Center, the UW Health One South Park Street Clinic, UnityPoint Health-Meriter Hospital (a partner of UW Health), and the Madison Surgery Center, all located in Madison, WI. The Division is supported by nationally recognized speech-language pathologists and audiologists.

Faculty in the Division of Comprehensive Otolaryngology provide full-spectrum surgical care for adult and pediatric patients, and also have developed clinical niches within the field including advanced sleep surgery and endoscopic surgery.

Academic opportunities include training and mentorship of medical students and residents, as well as the potential to develop an independent research program in the candidate's area of interest and expertise. Competitive research startup funding is available.

Key Job Responsibilities:

Service and Leadership:

  • Be an active participant in regional and national professional associations. Leadership opportunities exist within the department and institution for qualified and interested candidates.

  • Participate in administrative, and committee work to support the clinical and scholarly missions of UW Health and the School of Medicine and Public Health. An essential part of these duties will be working in a collegial relationship with other faculty members. Academic duties and responsibilities beyond baseline faculty expectations will depend on individual interests and expertise.

Academic program:

  • The successfully recruited surgeon on the Clinical Health Sciences (CHS) Track will also participate in or develop areas of academic and scholarly pursuit. The applicant will conduct or develop academic activities that may focus in a variety of areas, such as research, surgical education, mentorship, quality improvement, multidisciplinary complex care, or global outreach. In the development of an academic focus, the faculty member will be able to draw on numerous available collaborators.

  • For those interested in research, deep research infrastructure support, including patient reported outcomes research, includes access to research cores in Clinical Trials Research, Qualitative Research, Statistical Analysis and Research Programming, and Histology as well as broad support of grant writing and the application process, grant compliance and grant management. Strong collaborations exist between the Engineering Department and Biomedical Engineering with one of the most vibrant Innovation and Design Hubs in the country. Extensive expertise and unique opportunities exist in "big data" and multi-institutional collaborations. Adjustments to this dedicated percentage of time can be made based on the funding needs and successful applicants' line of scientific inquiry.

Clinical Activity:

  • The applicant should have command of the core knowledge and understanding of medical sciences relevant to the comprehensive otolaryngologic care of adult and pediatric patients including advanced diagnostic and medical and surgical management skills. The applicant is expected to participate in staffing a regional outreach otolaryngology clinic at a frequency of once per month. Occasional otolaryngology on-call coverage and regional outreach clinical commitments are shared amongst all faculty.

Education:

  • Faculty in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery share a commitment to education at levels of medical student and resident training, and continuing medical education. Education and teaching of clinical and sub-intern UWSMPH medical students, resident physicians are included in daily clinical responsibilities.

The Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at UW SMPH

The Department of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery (DOHS) includes seven divisions: Comprehensive Otolaryngology, Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery, Laryngology, Otology and Neurotology, Pediatric Otolaryngology and Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery. We provide a full range of state-of-the-art specialized tertiary and quaternary care for adults and children throughout the Midwest. Ongoing clinical trials have recruited from across the country.

Education within the Department includes a commitment to medical student education, an ACGME accredited residency program of 20 residents, fellowships in Head & Neck Oncologic and Reconstructive Surgery, Laryngology, and Speech-Language Pathology, a clinical externship in Audiology, and the nation's only T32 Voice Training Program. Faculty within DOHNS also mentor and advise graduate students from a variety of academic programs. The Department currently has 30 active extramural grants with a total budget of over $25 million, as well as collaborations with related programs across the University of Wisconsin campus.

Qualifications:

  • Prior to the appointment start date, candidate's specialization must include eligibility or certification in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery (ABOHNS) or by the American Osteopathic Boards of Ophthalmology and Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery (AOBOOHNS)

  • WI medical license by appointment start date. Must be eligible for enrollment as a billing provider and for all necessary hospital privileges, by appointment start date. For an appointment at Associate Professor or Professor rank on CT or CHS track, candidates will meet criteria established by the department and as outlined in the School of Medicine and Public Health guidelines for promotion or appointment to Associate or Professor on the CHS or CT track.
