Job description

Reliability Engineering Intern / Co-op

Location: Cayce, South Carolina

Schedule: Monday–Friday, approximately 6:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.

Work split: Approximately 50% plant floor / 50% office and data analysis

Position Overview

We are seeking a Reliability Engineering Intern or Co-op to support its Central Maintenance and Reliability team.

This is a hands-on learning opportunity for an engineering student interested in understanding how large industrial equipment operates, how failures are investigated and how maintenance data is used to reduce downtime.

The intern will work with reliability engineers and technicians across the melt shop and rolling mill. Responsibilities will include field inspections, equipment-data analysis, reliability reporting, predictive-maintenance support and a defined improvement project.

This is not a desk-only internship. Candidates must be interested in spending significant time in an active steel-mill environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Shadow reliability engineers and technicians throughout the facility
  • Learn the melt-shop and rolling-mill processes
  • Assist with field inspections and equipment-condition assessments
  • Collect, organize and analyze maintenance and equipment data
  • Pull work-order and failure information from SAP/CMMS
  • Help identify recurring failures and frequently problematic assets
  • Assist with vibration monitoring, thermal imaging and other predictive-maintenance activities
  • Support root-cause investigations
  • Update equipment records, maintenance documentation and reliability reports
  • Communicate with engineers, technicians, millwrights, electricians and operations personnel
  • Complete and present a defined reliability-improvement project

Candidate Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing an engineering or engineering-technology degree
  • Interest in reliability, industrial maintenance, manufacturing or heavy equipment
  • Basic understanding of mechanical or electrical systems
  • Strong curiosity about how equipment operates and why it fails
  • Ability to organize information and communicate findings
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Willingness to ask questions and seek out learning opportunities
  • Ability to work safely in a hot, noisy and physically demanding environment
  • Willingness to spend approximately 50% of the assignment on the plant floor

Helpful Experience

Previous industrial experience is helpful but not required. Relevant experience may come from:
