Biomedical Engineer 3D Printing information

What does a biomedical engineer 3D printing do?

A Biomedical Engineer specializing in 3D printing uses advanced additive manufacturing technologies to design and create medical devices, prosthetics, implants, and tissue scaffolds. They work closely with healthcare professionals to develop customized solutions that improve patient outcomes. Their responsibilities often include computer-aided design (CAD), selecting appropriate biomaterials, and ensuring that printed products meet regulatory and safety standards. This field requires a combination of engineering, biology, and material science expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a biomedical engineer 3D printing?

To thrive as a Biomedical Engineer specializing in 3D printing, you need a solid background in biomedical engineering principles, CAD modeling, and materials science, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with 3D printing technologies, such as FDM, SLA, and SLS, as well as familiarity with software like SolidWorks and experience with regulatory standards, is often required. Strong problem-solving, creativity, and effective communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for designing innovative medical devices, ensuring product safety, and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams to advance healthcare solutions.

How does a biomedical engineer 3D printing typically collaborate with clinicians and researchers during the product development process?

Biomedical Engineers in 3D Printing often work closely with clinicians and researchers to understand clinical needs, gather anatomical data, and refine prototypes. This collaboration ensures that the custom devices or models meet both medical requirements and regulatory standards. Regular interdisciplinary meetings, feedback sessions, and iterative design reviews are common, fostering a dynamic environment where engineering solutions are aligned with real-world healthcare challenges. Effective communication and teamwork are crucial in translating medical concepts into functional 3D-printed products.

Job description

Plan A Technologies is looking for an experiencedPrincipal Prototyping Engineer. This role operates outside the traditional delivery engineering structure. You will report directly to the CEO and collaborate with leadership and engineering teams to rapidly turn ideas into working prototypes. We are looking for someone who can operate independently and is skilled across disciplines: software, hardware, AI, mechanical, and electrical. You will be taking concepts to working demos quickly and iteratively.

Some projects will involve developing new concepts from scratch. Others may focus on improving or rethinking existing technologies. You will have direct access to a prototyping budget and the freedom to move quickly without bureaucracy or layers of approval to fight through.

Please note:you must have at least 6+ years of Software and Hardwareexperienceto be considered for this role.

JOB RESPONSIBILITY

Build working prototypes of new casino gaming products: hardware, software, AI, or all three.

Translate high level ideas into working code and physical builds quickly.

Integrate sensors, RFID, cameras, displays, and embedded systems into functional MVPs.

Use AI tooling and automation to compress development timelines.

Stand up demos weekly. We value prototypes over presentations.

Operate independently. You will set your own technical direction.

Hand off mature prototypes to the R&D engineering team in India and Australia for hardening.

QUALIFICATIONS

Build hardware. PCB design, sensor integration, microcontroller programming, the works.

CAD fluency — Sharp3D, Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or Onshape.

Hands-on with 3D printers, CNC, laser cutters, and other rapid prototyping equipment.

Comfortable with Raspberry Pi, Arduino, Jetson, ESP32, Android, and similar platforms.

Working knowledge of modern AI tooling — LLMs, computer vision, agents, automation.

Integration experience with APIs, RFID, cameras, sensors, and displays.

A portfolio of things you built — GitHub, YouTube, side projects, competitive robotics, hackathons, maker projects. We care more about what you have shipped than where you went to school.

Independence. You do not need a PM, a Jira board, or a standing meeting to make progress.

Excellent verbal and written English communication skills

Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and analytical abilities.

Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.

Initiative and drive to do great things
