What does a biomedical design engineer intern do?

A Biomedical Design Engineer Intern assists in the development and testing of medical devices and healthcare technologies. Their responsibilities may include creating prototypes, conducting research, performing data analysis, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to solve medical challenges. Interns often use computer-aided design (CAD) software, participate in product testing, and help ensure that devices meet regulatory and safety standards. This role provides valuable hands-on experience in both engineering and healthcare innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a biomedical design engineer intern?

To thrive as a Biomedical Design Engineer Intern, you need a background in biomedical engineering or a related field, with knowledge of engineering principles, biology, and medical device design. Familiarity with CAD software, prototyping tools, and regulatory standards such as ISO 13485 or FDA guidelines is typically expected. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication skills make candidates stand out in collaborative, multidisciplinary environments. These competencies are crucial for developing safe, innovative biomedical solutions that meet both technical and regulatory requirements.

What types of projects do biomedical design engineer interns typically work on?

Biomedical Design Engineer Interns often participate in multidisciplinary teams to develop prototypes, conduct product testing, and assist with the design of medical devices or components. These projects usually involve using CAD software, collaborating with engineers and clinicians, and conducting research to solve real-world healthcare challenges. Such hands-on experience allows interns to build technical skills, understand regulatory requirements, and gain valuable insights into the medical device development lifecycle—preparing them for future roles in biomedical engineering.

What is the difference between Biomedical Design Engineer Internship vs Biomedical Equipment Technician?

AspectBiomedical Design Engineer InternshipBiomedical Equipment Technician
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in biomedical engineering or related fieldAssociate's or bachelor's degree in biomedical technology or related field
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, R&D departments, product development teamsHospitals, clinics, service centers, maintenance facilities
Industry UsageProduct development, medical device design, prototypingEquipment installation, maintenance, repair

The Biomedical Design Engineer Internship focuses on designing and developing new medical devices, often in a lab or office setting, while the Biomedical Equipment Technician works on maintaining and repairing existing medical equipment in clinical environments. Both roles require technical knowledge but differ in their primary responsibilities and work settings.

Job description

ADVANCE YOUR CAREER. ADVANCE THE WORLD.

At AMD, we believe technology can change lives for the better. It can heal us, entertain us, and make us more connected, productive, and understanding of the world around us. And we’re looking for talent who feel the same: people who want to leave the planet better than they found it, those who don’t shy away from humanity’s challenges but are determined to help solve them.

AMD is powering the next generation of supercomputing, high-performance computing, cloud, and AI. Whether you’re designing next-gen processors, enabling AI breakthroughs, or creating go-to-market plans, every role at AMD contributes to something bigger — technology that moves the world forward.

Job Role and Responsibility: AMD, Inc., is hiring Silicon Design Engineer to Research, design, develop, and/or test electronic components and systems for semiconductor and related device manufacturing. Perform definition, design, verification, review, and/or documentation for ASIC development. Determine architecture design, logic design, and/or system simulation. Define module interfaces/formats for simulation. Contribute to the development of multidimensional designs involving the layout of complex integrated circuits. Work in an area of specialization to develop ASIC/layout design where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Develop ML-driven automation to explore large design spaces and identify optimal circuit and memory subsystem configurations. Analyze large-scale simulation data to evaluate latency, throughput, bandwidth, and performance metrics of memory and interconnect components. Build predictive performance models for early-cycle design validation. Run data driven diagnosis to detect the possible cause of the issue and work with design teams to develop solutions. Apply statistical methods to analyze the latency and throughput of circuits, ensuring that the design meets specifications and performance criteria. Utilize knowledge of computers and electronics, including circuit boards, processors, chips, and electronic equipment, as well as knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles; Apply knowledge of engineering principles, best practices, and technologies to the design, development, and testing of various AMD products.
