Job description

Structural Designer / Steel Detailer – Autodesk Advance Steel

IAC – Industrial Accessories Company Overland Park, Kansas | Onsite

Seeking an experienced Structural Designer / Steel Detailer to join our growing Engineering team. This position plays a critical role in developing the structural steel models, details, and fabrication-ready drawings behind some of North America's most complex heavy industrial facilities.

This is not a commercial building drafting position. Professional Autodesk Advance Steel experience is required.

Our Structural Designers work on structural systems supporting complete industrial process facilities, including dust collection and air pollution control systems, bulk material handling systems, pneumatic conveying systems, rotary dryers, cyclones, baghouses, conveyors, silos, stacks, structural towers, and equipment support structures.

You'll work directly with Structural Engineers and collaborate with Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Project Management, Procurement, Fabrication, Construction, and Field Services to transform engineering concepts and calculations into accurate, constructable 3D models and fabrication-ready drawings.

We're looking for someone who understands more than CAD. The right candidate understands structural steel, connections, fabrication, erection, constructability, and how industrial equipment and structures actually come together in the field.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed 3D structural steel models using Autodesk Advance Steel.
  • Produce fabrication/shop drawings, erection drawings, assembly drawings, and construction drawings from Advance Steel models.
  • Model and detail beams, columns, bracing, trusses, equipment supports, platforms, stairs, handrails, structural towers, pipe racks, conveyor galleries, and miscellaneous steel.
  • Develop structural models supporting baghouses, cyclones, silos, hoppers, conveyors, rotary dryers, process ductwork, stacks, and other industrial process equipment.
  • Develop and detail structural steel connections based on engineering requirements.
  • Interpret engineering calculations, sketches, specifications, and design criteria and translate them into accurate models and drawings.
  • Develop foundation layouts, anchor bolt plans, embed plans, and reinforced concrete details.
  • Generate and verify bills of material (BOM), material lists, and material quantities.
  • Apply knowledge of welding symbols, bolted connections, fabrication practices, and steel erection requirements.
  • Coordinate structural models with mechanical equipment, ductwork, piping, conveyors, electrical systems, foundations, and construction requirements.
  • Perform clash detection and identify interferences, access issues, fabrication concerns, and constructability challenges before they reach the shop or field.
  • Review vendor drawings and incorporate equipment requirements into structural models.
  • Work directly with Engineering, Project Management, Procurement, Fabrication, and Construction to resolve technical and constructability issues.
  • Support fabrication, construction, installation, and commissioning, including resolution of field fit-up and installation issues.
  • Perform quality-control reviews of models, connection details, BOMs, and drawings prior to release.
  • Maintain accurate models, drawing revisions, and project documentation.
  • Occasionally travel to project sites for field measurements, verification, and construction support.

Typical Projects

Our Structural Designers work on systems supporting:

  • Dust Collection & Air Pollution Control Systems
  • Baghouses & Cyclones
  • Rotary Dryers
  • Pneumatic Conveying Systems
  • Bulk Material Handling Systems
  • Belt, Drag & Screw Conveyors
  • Bucket Elevators & Conveyor Galleries
  • Silos & Hoppers
  • Process Ductwork
  • Structural Towers & Pipe Racks
  • Equipment Platforms & Stair Towers
  • Stack Structures
  • Equipment Support Structures
  • Heavy Industrial Foundations
  • Complete Turnkey Industrial Facilities

Industries include cement, lime, mining and minerals, steel, foundries, battery and recycling, carbon black, food processing, pet food, grain handling, ethanol, plastics, biomass, alternative fuels, power generation, and industrial manufacturing.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional structural steel design/detailing experience, preferably in heavy industrial, EPC, manufacturing, mining, cement, aggregate, power generation, material handling, or similar environments.
  • Hands-on professional Autodesk Advance Steel experience is required.
  • Strong proficiency developing detailed 3D structural steel models in Advance Steel.
  • Demonstrated experience producing fabrication/shop and erection drawings from Advance Steel models.
  • Professional experience with AutoCAD and working knowledge of Autodesk Inventor.
  • Strong understanding of structural steel framing, connection detailing, welding symbols, bolted connections, fabrication, and erection practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, structural calculations, specifications, fabrication drawings, and construction documents.
  • Experience with equipment support structures, platforms, stairs, towers, conveyor galleries, pipe racks, or similar industrial structures.
  • Experience with foundation layouts, anchor bolt plans, embed plans, and concrete details.
  • Experience generating and verifying BOMs and material quantities.
  • Understanding of constructability and the relationship between engineering, fabrication, and field installation.
  • Familiarity with AISC, OSHA, IBC, and applicable structural and construction standards.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-track EPC environment.

Autodesk Advance Steel – Required

Professional Autodesk Advance Steel experience is a mandatory qualification for this position.

Candidates should be prepared to discuss their years and recency of Advance Steel experience, types and complexity of structures modeled, fabrication/shop and erection drawings produced, connection detailing, BOM generation, and interaction with fabrication and field construction teams.
