How much do biology tech jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 20, 2026, the average yearly pay for biology tech in the United States is $48,391.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $38,500.00 and $52,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How to make 100K a year with a biology degree?

A biology technician can reach a $100,000 annual salary by gaining advanced education such as a master's or Ph.D., specializing in high-demand areas like biotech or pharmaceuticals, and acquiring certifications or skills in data analysis, laboratory management, or regulatory compliance. Working in biotech firms, pharmaceutical companies, or research institutions with leadership roles or specialized expertise can also increase earning potential.

What biology jobs pay over $100K?

Biology technicians typically do not earn over $100,000; however, roles such as biomedical scientists, research directors, and senior laboratory managers in biotech or pharmaceutical companies often have salaries exceeding this amount. Advanced degrees, specialized skills, and experience in management or research leadership are common requirements for these high-paying positions.

What are Biology Techs?

Biology Technicians, often referred to as Biology Techs, are professionals who assist biologists and researchers with laboratory and fieldwork. Their duties include collecting samples, conducting experiments, analyzing data, and maintaining laboratory equipment. Biology Techs play a crucial role in supporting scientific studies in areas such as environmental science, genetics, microbiology, and ecology. They often work in educational institutions, research labs, government agencies, or private industry. Attention to detail and strong technical skills are important qualities for this role.

What is the difference between Biology Tech vs Laboratory Technician?

Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

Biology Techs and Laboratory Technicians often share similar educational backgrounds and work environments. Both roles support scientific research and testing in labs, but Biology Techs may focus more on biological sample preparation and data collection, while Laboratory Technicians often handle broader testing procedures. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find the right fit for their skills and career goals.

What does a biological tech do?

A biological technician assists scientists in conducting experiments, collecting data, and maintaining laboratory equipment. They often prepare samples, record results, and use tools like microscopes and lab instruments, typically working in research or clinical laboratories. Strong attention to detail and knowledge of safety protocols are essential for this role.

What are some common challenges a Biology Technician might encounter when working in a laboratory setting?

Biology Technicians often face challenges such as maintaining strict adherence to safety protocols, handling delicate or hazardous biological samples, and troubleshooting equipment malfunctions. They may also need to manage time efficiently when balancing multiple experiments or data collection tasks. Effective communication and collaboration with research scientists and other team members are essential to ensure accurate results and smooth workflow in the lab.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Biology Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Biology Technician, you need a solid understanding of biological sciences, laboratory techniques, and typically an associate's or bachelor's degree in biology or a related field. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, data analysis software, and safety protocols is important, and certifications such as Laboratory Technician credentials can be advantageous. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective teamwork set standout technicians apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring accurate experimental results, maintaining lab safety, and supporting scientific research effectively.

What are the careers in biotechnology?

Careers in biotechnology include roles such as research scientist, laboratory technician, quality control analyst, and bioprocess engineer. These positions often require knowledge of molecular biology, lab techniques, and sometimes certifications or advanced degrees. Biotechnology careers typically involve working in labs, manufacturing facilities, or research institutions to develop products like medicines, vaccines, and agricultural solutions.
