Position Summary:


We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Research Associate. In this role, the successful candidate is responsible for performing laboratory experiments under the mentorship of a faculty member in the Department of Microbiology. This laboratory studies disease-causing bacteria, with a primary focus on understanding cell envelope functions of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Our overall goal is to understand basic bacterial cell functions that are important for virulence and antibiotic resistance.


This position is suited for an individual highly motivated to seek to build a portfolio of research accomplishments in preparation for acquiring a higher degree in biomedical research or medicine in the future. Therefore, the position is particularly well suited to an individual that graduated with an appropriate bachelor’s degree this year. 

Job Responsibilities:

• Basic lab research under general supervision as well as more advanced duties under direct supervision
• Assists in implementing new experimental procedures and protocols. Participates actively in developing, recommending and implementing new approved procedures, or modifications to existing protocols and procedures.
• Communicates ideas, problems, suggestions, and messages in a timely and effective manner. Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Seeks guidance as necessary for the performance of duties asks appropriate questions when in doubt and utilizes reference sources/materials to endure accuracy.

Additional Position Specific Responsibilities:

Basic Microbiology research. Common experimental techniques will include bacterial culture, DNA purification, PCR, cloning, gel electrophoresis, western blotting and protein purification.

Minimum Qualifications:


To qualify you must have a B.S. or B.A. in Biomedical or Physical Sciences. A minimum commitment of two years is required and placement in position may not exceed three years.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Prior familiarity with some of the experimental techniques listed above. Preference will be given to candidates having previous experience working with bacteria and molecular biology. The successful applicant should be able to learn techniques quickly and have good written, verbal and computer skills.

Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
