Purpose:

Reporting directly to the VP Hips n Knees RnD, the Sr Director, Hips R&D is accountable for setting and executing the R&D vision and strategy for DePuy Synthesโ€™ hips procedural solutions, including their integration with digital, robotics, and biologics portfolios. This role drives differentiated innovation by translating deep customer insights into high-impact solutions that deliver meaningful clinical value and maximize enterprise value for DePuy Synthes. As a member of the DePuy Synthes joints R&D Leadership Team (RDLT), the role requires active stewardship of enterprise capabilities, resources, standards, and ways of working to accelerate speed, quality, and value creation across DePuy Synthes R&D. The Sr Director owns the upfront and New Product Development lifecycleโ€”from concept through launch and plays a critical role in evolving processes, operating models, and talent to strengthen execution excellence. The position leads globally distributed R&D teams, serves on the cross functional hips platform leadership team, and reports to the VP of R&D Joints.

Responsibilities:
  • Enterprise-aligned R&D Vision & Strategy Defines and communicates the hips R&D vision and strategy, ensuring clear alignment with DePuy Synthes business priorities and R&D objectives. Partner with DPS stakeholders to help shape hip technology and procedural integration direction, scenario planning, and long term innovation strategies. Balance and actively manage hip past, present, and future R&D horizons, allocating resources with urgency and discipline across the enterprise to optimize total R&D impact.
  • Strategy Execution & Delivery Provide strong oversight and influence to ensure effective execution of the hips R&D strategy, with accountability for speed, quality, customer satisfaction and profitable growth. Drive cross portfolio integration and collaboration to maximize reuse of platforms, technologies, and capabilities across DPS hips R&D.
  • Customer and Outcome-Driven Innovation Partner with customers and business leaders to develop and refine an innovation roadmap that delivers compelling, differentiated value propositions across the hip care continuum.
  • R&D performance & continuous improvement Own hips R&D performance against DPS value creation metrics. Share best practices, insights, and lessons learned across the joints R&D team.
  • Leadership & governance Represent hips R&D on enterprise management forums, operating boards, business planning committees, innovation councils, and the DPS R&D Leadership Team.
  • Customer & Business Orientation Maintain strong relationships with key external stakeholders, including surgeon KOLs and emerging customer segments, to inform innovation priorities and adoption strategies.
  • Talent, Culture & Organizational Effectiveness Lead the talent and organizational strategy to ensure culture, capabilities, and structure are aligned with both near term execution needs and long term hip R&D goals. Develop leaders who consistently demonstrate enterprise thinking, accountability, trust, curiosity to relentlessly improve.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Required 10 years in R&D.
  • At least 3 yearsโ€™ experience specific to Hips systems R&D
  • At least a Bachelorโ€™s Degree
  • Must have demonstrated track record in a R&D/ Platform leadership position within a large scale, global organization.
  • Strong talent management credentials with at least 5-10 yearsโ€™ experience in organizational and talent development.
  • Expert at achieving strong results in an orthopedic division or company by leading through influence and deep collaboration across the franchise and enterprise.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills and ability to build and maintain relationships at all levels in the organization and with external customers and regulatory agencies.
  • Meaningful experience in strong execution of product launches with emphasis on Design to Excellence and Design to Value principles.
  • Measurable track record of creating value through new innovations
  • Ability to shape/ lead product portfolio with a strong record of leadership in enriching the innovation pipeline.
  • Travel included domestic and international of around 30%
  • Preferred MBA, MS engineering or advanced degree preferred
  • Preferred Area of Study: Mechanical / Systems / Biomedical Engineering

Additional Description for Pay Transparency: The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs.
