The Office of Wildlife exists to provide wise stewardship of Louisiana's wildlife and associated habitats and increase wildlife conservation awareness. BIOLOGIST DCL-A The Biologist DCL-A position will serve as a Deer Program specialist and coordinate the Deer Management Assistant Program (DMAP).

The incumbent serves as the Department's subject matter expert and staff advisor to agency personnel and the public on the management of white-tailed deer through the Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP). The incumbent also serves as a senior advisor on statewide investigations of deer diseases, urban and nuisance deer management programs, and feral hog disease and management issues. Additionally, the incumbent mentors lower-level biologists and serves as the Assistant to the Deer Program Manager.

This job is designated as a Dual Career Ladder(DCL) job and requires applicants meet the following supplemental qualification in addition to the minimum qualifications. Supplemental Qualification: Four years of experience in whitetail deer management, population surveys, habitat development, research, management and regulations development. IDEAL CANDIDATE Experience providing deer management technical assistance Experienced in plant taxonomy Experience with browse surveys and other habitat data collection techniques Experience with herd health checks and wildlife necropsy Ability to communicate professionally, orally and in writing Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team setting Experience with the chemical immobilization of wildlife Available for regular field travel, overnight stays, and participation in regional Southeastern working groups Ability to lift objects weighing over 50 pounds Experience with operating off-road vehicles Minimum Qualifications A bachelor's degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources plus four years of experience in wildlife or fisheries, forestry, or environmental science; OR A non-thesis master's degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources plus three years of the required specialized experience; OR A master's degree with a completed thesis or a doctorate in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources plus two years of the required specialized experience.

Job Duties and Other Information JOB DUTIES Biologist DCL-A - Deer Program Deer Management Assistant Program (DMAP) Coordinator. This position represents a major subset of the Deer Program, and as such receives programmatic supervision from the Biologist Program Manager.

This job is designated as a Dual Career Ladder job as defined in CS Rule 1.14.1.1 requiring performance of higher-level complex duties and possession of advanced specialized skills. ESSENTIAL DUTIES Duties may include some or all of the following: Statewide coordination of the DMAP program Represent Louisiana on regional deer working groups. Provide statewide leadership, administrative support and technical assistance with DMAP program enrollment, fee collection, data collection, and habitat surveys

Coordinate and lead workshops and field training of new biologists in conducting habitat surveys, biological data interpretation/analysis, and computer data entry. Perform evaluation and analysis of deer data and present to technical staff, DMAP clubs and cooperatives, and other sportsman's groups. Manage all DMAP and associated data, including herd health, browse and habitat survey data, and standard reports with appropriate hardware, software and internet resources with the assistance of computer or IT personnel.

Prepare a comprehensive annual DMAP Report and presentations for DMAP participants and technical staff. Assist with the coordination and performance of herd health checks on public and private lands in conjunction with the statewide deer breeding data, disease, and parasite research projects. Maintain extremely high level of competency and marksmanship with LDWF approved rifles and darting equipment for herd health, disease, or nuisance deer work.

POSITION- SPECIFIC DETAILS: Appointment Type: Job appointment, probational appointment, promotional, or detail to special duty. If filled as a job appointment, there is a possibility that this position may be converted to a probational appointment should funding become available. Current permanent status classified state employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if selected.

This position may be domiciled Statewide and will be determined once candidate is selected. This is a statewide position that will be domiciled in one of the following LDWF field offices: Hammond, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Minden, Monroe or Pineville. The position may also be domiciled at LDWF Headquarters in Baton Rouge.
