What is a biological construction monitor?

Biological Construction Monitors are professionals who oversee construction projects to ensure that environmental regulations and biological resource protections are followed. They monitor job sites for compliance with permits, inspect for protected species or habitats, and advise construction teams on how to minimize environmental impacts. Their work helps prevent harm to wildlife and plants during construction activities and ensures that projects meet legal and ecological requirements.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a biological construction monitor?

A Biological Construction Monitor must have a solid background in biology, ecology, or environmental science, often with a relevant degree and experience in environmental monitoring. Familiarity with GIS mapping, field survey equipment, and regulatory compliance systems is typically required. Strong observation skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for reporting findings and coordinating with construction teams. These competencies help ensure that construction projects comply with environmental regulations and minimize impacts on sensitive biological resources.

What are the typical challenges faced by a biological construction monitor during field projects?

Biological Construction Monitors often encounter challenges such as balancing project deadlines with regulatory compliance and minimizing environmental impacts. They must remain vigilant in identifying and mitigating risks to protected species or habitats, sometimes in rapidly changing site conditions. Effective communication with construction crews, project managers, and regulatory agencies is essential to ensure that biological concerns are addressed promptly. Adapting to shifting schedules and weather conditions is also common in this role.

What is the difference between Biological Construction Monitor vs Environmental Technician?

Bancroft Construction Services is seeking full-time experienced Field Biologist (GBM and/or DB) to support environmental compliance and construction monitoring for projects in and around Bakersfield, CA and Fresno County, CA. This role is ideal for a motivated biologist with strong SWAHA and BUOW experience who thrives in dynamic field environments and enjoys working collaboratively with construction and environmental teams.

This is a full-time position with consistent project work across multiple active job sites. Full-time status will be dependent on being approved for project by the project agency.

Position Summary

This field-based role involves conducting focused species surveys—with an emphasis on SWAHA and BUOW—monitoring construction activities, implementing avoidance and minimization measures, and documenting compliance with federal, state, and project-specific environmental permits. The position requires the ability to work independently in fast-paced outdoor and construction environments while coordinating closely with project teams.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct focused surveys for special-status species, with a primary focus on SWAHA and BUOW
  • Perform nesting bird surveys and monitoring in accordance with regulatory requirements
  • Provide biological construction monitoring and environmental inspections
  • Conduct pre-construction surveys and ongoing compliance monitoring
  • Implement avoidance and minimization measures (WEAPs, ESAs, buffers, exclusion zones)
  • Monitor and maintain wildlife exclusion fencing
  • Collect and manage field data using GPS and mobile applications (e.g., ArcGIS Field Maps, Fulcrum)
  • Prepare accurate daily logs, reports, and compliance documentation
  • Coordinate directly with construction crews, project managers, and environmental staff
Qualifications & Skills

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or related field
  • Minimum 2+ years of field biology or construction monitoring experience
  • Demonstrated experience with SWAHA and/or BUOW surveys and monitoring
  • Experience conducting nesting bird surveys and implementing buffers
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License and ability to travel independently throughout the region
  • Ability to work outdoors in variable weather and terrain conditions
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and communication skills
  • Flexible schedule, including early mornings, weekends, and potential travel
  • U.S. Citizenship required

Preferred Qualifications

  • DB or GBM authorization
  • Experience working on large-scale infrastructure or transportation projects
  • Familiarity with Central Valley and Inland Empire habitats and species
  • Experience working directly with contractors and leading compliance efforts
Work Environment

This position is field-intensive and may involve:

  • Long hours outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Walking or hiking on uneven terrain while carrying field equipment
  • Working in active construction sites around heavy equipment
  • Regular travel to the Cantua Creek, CA area
Compensation & Employment Status
  • Hourly Rate: $45–$60+/hour (based on experience and qualifications)
  • Employment Type: Full-Time
