How much do bioinformatics machine learning jobs pay per year?
What is a bioinformatics machine learning?
A Bioinformatics Machine Learning job involves applying machine learning techniques to analyze and interpret biological data, such as genomics, proteomics, and medical records. Professionals in this field develop algorithms, build predictive models, and enhance data-driven research in areas like personalized medicine and drug discovery. They work with large datasets, applying deep learning, neural networks, and other AI methods to extract meaningful insights. The role requires expertise in biology, statistics, and programming languages like Python or R.
What are the typical daily responsibilities for someone in a bioinformatics machine learning position?
In a Bioinformatics Machine Learning role, your daily tasks usually involve developing and tuning machine learning models to analyze large biological datasets, such as genomics or proteomics data. You'll collaborate closely with researchers, biologists, and data scientists to understand project goals, interpret results, and refine analytical approaches. Routine work includes coding, troubleshooting algorithms, visualizing data outputs, and documenting findings for internal teams or publication. The role often requires balancing independent analysis with teamwork and regular communication across disciplines, making it both technically challenging and highly collaborative.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the bioinformatics machine learning position, and why are they important?
A successful Bioinformatics Machine Learning professional needs a solid background in biology, statistics, and computer science, often backed by an advanced degree such as a Master's or PhD in bioinformatics, data science, or a related field. Proficiency with programming languages like Python or R, experience with machine learning libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, scikit-learn), and knowledge of version control systems are typical requirements, and relevant certifications can be beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication skills, and the capacity to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams set candidates apart. These skills are crucial for designing robust computational models, interpreting complex biological data, and translating findings into actionable insights in research or clinical settings.

Job description
Role Summary:
Fore Bio is a next-generation precision oncology company focused on the development of plixorafenib, an investigational, novel, small-molecule, next-generation, orally available selective inhibitor of mutated BRAF.
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Scientist to join our growing research team. The successful candidate will lead the development and application of computational tools and pipelines to analyze large-scale biological datasets, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and clinical data. This individual will play a key role in interpreting complex biological data to support drug discovery, biomarker identification, and clinical development. This role is focused on supporting biomarker discovery, patient stratification, and translational research. It is important for this individual to have knowledge in observational research, cancer biology and bioinformatics with strong statistical programming skillset, and experience managing complex analyses.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead the analysis and interpretation of multi-omics datasets to support internal research and external collaborations
- Play a critical role in identifying and characterizing oncogenic mutations and gene fusions relevant to precision medicine
- Integrate public and proprietary datasets for hypothesis generation, uncovering mutation/fusion driven disease, informing drug targeting strategies, and supporting diagnostic and therapeutic development
- Analyze large-scale biological data, such as gene expression, copy-number, mutation, methylation, next-generation sequencing and perform clinicogenomics analysis to support publications
- Analyze translational and biomarker data for clinical-stage oncology programs with a focus on mechanism of action, target engagement, PK/PD/efficacy relationships, patient selection strategies and mechanisms of intrinsic and acquired resistance.
- Designs, implements and executes experiments in preclinical models and generates translational datasets to inform biomarker strategy, dose and schedule optimization, patient selection, combination approaches, and mechanisms of drug response and resistance as an additional responsibility.
- Initiate and manage contract studies with CROs
- Collaborate with cross functional team members, CROs, data scientists, and clinicians to translate computational findings into actionable insights
- Independently builds, aligns, and executes technical plans to achieve objectives across multiple programs
- Impacts discovery programs through both direct and indirect contribution as a member of the project team
- Effectively communicate study findings through internal presentations, assist in drafting conference abstracts and manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals.
- Contribute to scientific publications, regulatory filings, and intellectual property
- Stay current with advances in bioinformatics, machine learning, and relevant technologies
- Travel up to 10% of the time, based upon program needs
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
- PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, or related field with 3+ years of postdoctoral or industry experience; or Master’s with 7+ years of relevant experience
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, and Bash for ‘omics analysis and data visualization
- Deep understanding of genomics high-throughput sequencing technologies (e.g., NGS, WGS, WTS, RNA-seq, etc.) and data formats (e.g., FASTQ, BAM/CRAM, VCF, GTF)
- Experience with cloud computing (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and workflow management tools (e.g., Nextflow, Snakemake, WDL)
- Experience in developing analysis plans and conducting analysis for studies using large real-world observational data or with multi-omics databases.
- Experience running bioinformatics pipelines and familiarity with bioinformatics methods and tools
- Understanding of novel analytical or computational (machine learning) techniques and data science to integrate and mine large complex data is a plus
