What We Look For In a Genetics Tutor

• Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of Mendelian inheritance, molecular genetics, gene expression and regulation, chromosomal abnormalities, population genetics, quantitative genetics, epigenetics, and genomic technologies including PCR, gel electrophoresis, and CRISPR. • Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at breaking down complex inheritance patterns including epistasis, pleiotropy, and polygenic traits. Guides students through constructing pedigree analyses, solving linkage mapping problems, calculating allele frequencies, and interpreting genomic data. Emphasizes probabilistic reasoning and connects genetics to genetic counseling, forensic science, evolutionary biology, and personalized medicine applications.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with genetics curricula at undergraduate levels and common challenges such as distinguishing dominance relationships, solving multi-gene inheritance problems, and understanding regulatory mechanisms. Adapts instruction using Punnett squares, pedigree practice sets, and bioinformatics tools to support biology majors and pre-medical students preparing for graduate-level genetics or MCAT biological sciences sections.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
