Job description

Job Title:BYU Genomics and Bioinformatics Center Director - Biology - CFS Professional Faculty

Posting End Date:August 28, 2026

Position Start Date:January 1, 2027

Required Degree: Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Genomics, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, or a related field. Foreign equivalent degree accepted. The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Experience:Demonstrated record of research in genomics, DNA sequencing, and bioinformatics. Demonstrated ability to organize and manage a laboratory or service center. Demonstrated ability to work with a range of sequencing platforms, particularly long-read and high-throughput technologies. Demonstrated ability with experimental design consultation and research support. Demonstrated proficiency in teaching and mentoring both undergraduate and graduate levels in genomics, genetics, and sequencing technologies. Willingness to pursue externally funded research and scholarly collaboration.

Duties/Expectations:The Director has a primary responsibility for directing and developing the center as a consultative hub for genomics and bioinformatics research. The position is designed to support faculty and student research through expert guidance on sequencing technologies and data analysis, while also contributing to the university's teaching, mentoring, and scholarly mission.

  • 65% Center Administration and Consultation: The Director leads all operational aspects of the GBC, including staff supervision, instrument oversight, budgeting, and procurement. The Director provides consultative support to faculty, graduate students, and external partners on experimental design, sequencing strategy, library preparation, read depth/coverage, platform selection, and initial bioinformatics workflows.
  • 20% Teaching and Mentoring: The Director will teach one to two courses per year focused on nucleic acid sequencing, experimental design, or data analysis, and provide formal and informal mentoring to undergraduate and graduate students. This includes substantial involvement in experiential learning and research training across the College of Life Sciences.
  • 10% Independent Research: The Director is expected to lead a modest but active research program that aligns with the mission of the GBC and complements the department and college's scholarly profile. This allocation is essential for serving as lead PI on major instrumentation grants (e.g., NSF MRI), participating in multi-institution proposals as Co-PI, and contributing to the university's scholarly community.
  • 5% Citizenship and Service: The Director will provide service to the department, college, university, and broader scientific community, including committee participation, institutional initiatives, and professional service roles.

This position requires the successful candidate to relocate and/or reside in Utah for the duration of their employment.
