What does a Biogas Process Engineer do?

A Biogas Process Engineer is responsible for designing, optimizing, and overseeing the processes involved in converting organic waste into biogas through anaerobic digestion. They work on improving the efficiency, safety, and environmental impact of biogas production plants. Their tasks often include process modeling, equipment selection, troubleshooting, and ensuring compliance with regulations. Biogas Process Engineers collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop sustainable energy solutions and may also be involved in research and development of new technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Biogas Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Biogas Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical, environmental, or mechanical engineering, often with a relevant degree and experience in renewable energy processes. Familiarity with biogas production technologies, process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or BioWin), and environmental regulations is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities help professionals stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial for optimizing biogas systems, ensuring regulatory compliance, and driving innovation in sustainable energy solutions.

What is the difference between Biogas Process Engineer vs Biogas Plant Technician?

AspectBiogas Process EngineerBiogas Plant Technician
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in biogas or renewable energyTechnical diploma or vocational training in biogas systems
Work EnvironmentDesign, process optimization, project management in industrial settingsOperational, maintenance, troubleshooting on-site at biogas plants
Employer & IndustryRenewable energy companies, engineering firms, project developersBiogas plant operators, waste management companies

The Biogas Process Engineer focuses on designing, optimizing, and managing biogas production processes, often working on projects and system improvements. In contrast, the Biogas Plant Technician handles daily operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting of biogas systems on-site. Both roles are essential in the biogas industry but differ in responsibilities, qualifications, and work environment.

What are some typical challenges a Biogas Process Engineer faces when optimizing plant performance?

Biogas Process Engineers often encounter challenges related to maintaining process stability, especially when feedstock quality varies or unexpected contaminants enter the system. Troubleshooting issues such as fluctuating gas yields, foaming, or equipment fouling requires a strong understanding of both biological and mechanical processes. Collaboration with operations staff, laboratory technicians, and maintenance teams is essential to identify root causes and implement practical solutions. Staying current with regulatory changes and new technologies also plays a key role in ensuring efficient and compliant plant operations.

Job description

BIOFerm™ is looking for a Piping Engineer to be responsible for the design, specification, and coordination of piping systems used in BIOFerm’s renewable energy facilities. This role ensures that all piping layouts, materials, and assemblies meet project requirements, safety standards, and operational performance goals. The ideal candidate has a strong background in piping design for process or industrial systems, with the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines to deliver high-quality, cost-effective designs.

BIOFermâ„¢ is a Wisconsin-based renewable energy company specializing in turnkey anaerobic digestion and biogas upgrading facilities. Our mission is to provide sustainable and economical solutions for organic waste diversion, transforming food waste, manure, biosolids, and other organic materials into renewable natural gas (RNG), green energy, vehicle fuel, heat, and organic products.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop piping systems for biogas and anaerobic digestion facilities, including process flow, utility, and support piping.
  • Maintain P&IDs, piping layouts, isometric drawings, and material takeoffs.
  • Select appropriate materials, valves, fittings, and supports based on process conditions, pressure, and compatibility.
  • Collaborate with process, mechanical, structural, and electrical engineers to ensure integrated, constructible designs.
  • Review vendor drawings and submittals for compliance with project specifications and industry standards.
  • Coordinate with project managers, construction teams, and contractors to support fabrication, installation, and testing.
  • Conduct site visits for layout verification, equipment tie-ins, and field modifications.
  • Support procurement efforts by providing technical input on bids and evaluating vendor quotations.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant codes, standards, and safety requirements (ASME, ASTM, API, ANSI, etc.).
  • Assist during commissioning and start-up phases by providing technical support and design clarification.
  • Conduct design reviews, constructability assessments, and quality control checks.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and contribute to the development of standard piping design procedures.
  • Complete additional tasks as assigned.
Competencies & Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 5 years of experience in piping design within industrial, process, or energy sectors (renewable energy experience a plus).
  • Strong knowledge of process piping systems, including layout, stress, and material selection.
  • Proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD design software.
  • Familiarity with P&ID development, bill of materials (BOM), and construction drawing packages.
  • Understanding of piping codes and standards such as ASME B31.3, API, and ASTM.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
