As a biofeedback therapist, your job is to support the mental health of your patients by using technology to monitor their biological behavior as well as therapy techniques to teach them how to change that behavior. In this role, you may develop a personalized treatment plan for each patient, clean and attach electrodes and other devices, and discuss readings with patients to help them understand what their bodies are doing. Biofeedback therapists often scan and interpret aspects of the body like heart function, breathing rate, skin temperature, brainwaves, and muscle activity, all of which can impact the physical and mental health of patients. For this job, therapy usually involves speaking with patients, rather than providing direct stimulation through techniques like electroshock therapy.
| Aspect | Biofeedback Therapist | Neurofeedback Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Certification in biofeedback or related fields, sometimes requiring licensure | Certification in neurofeedback, often with less extensive training |
| Work Environment | Clinics, hospitals, mental health centers | Specialized neurofeedback clinics, wellness centers |
| Industry Usage | Used broadly for stress, anxiety, pain management | Focused on brain activity regulation and cognitive issues |
| Job Role | Assess, develop treatment plans, and guide patients in biofeedback techniques | Operate neurofeedback equipment, assist in brain training sessions |
While both roles involve biofeedback techniques, Biofeedback Therapists have broader responsibilities, including assessment and treatment planning, often requiring more extensive certification. Neurofeedback Technicians typically focus on operating equipment under supervision. Both roles are vital in mental health and wellness settings, but Biofeedback Therapists generally have a wider scope of practice and credentials.
