Job description

Position Description
Performs specialized work in the planning, conducting and/or supervising of original research at TTUHSC. Responsible for participating in, planning, scheduling and/or supervising research projects and the interpretation of the results for publication. Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness of project. May supervise research and student assistants.
Texas Tech Health El Paso (TTEP) is not considering applications from individuals who require sponsorship for an employment visa, including those with H1B visas or those currently on student or postgraduate visas.
Additionally, this position is not eligible for remote or hybrid opportunities. All work is required to be performed onsite at TTEP.
Major/Essential Functions
  • Performs staining of cells/tissues for immunofluorescence analysis and digital imaging of stained cells and tissues using microscopes, including, including confocal microscope.
  • Biochemical assays and methods, including immunoprecipitation followed by Mass spectroscopy and automated western blot analyses to examine protein-protein interaction or protein-nucleic acids interaction in vitro with RNA-DNA hybrids and in vivo with R-loops. Effect of nucleotides such as ATP and GTP hydrolysis on resolution RNA-DNA hybrids.
  • Participate in research data collection by performing highly skilled experiments using mammalian and yeast cells, Including cultured primary fibroblast and neurons. Cell transfection and infection with siRNA, antisense oligos, plasmids and viral vectors. Perform recombinant DNA techniques (such as cloning, PCR amplification), Isolation of nucleic acids, including genomic and plasmid DNAs, and proteins, including recombinant proteins from cells (bacteria, yeast or mammalian cells) for biochemical and molecular analysis.
  • Breeding of animals for desired genotypes and genotyping of mice using PCR and southern blotting. Necropsy, tissue processing for histology.
  • Protein isolation, purification, identification, and quantitation using automated SDS-PAGE or western blot analysis and immunoprecipitation followed by western blot analysis.
  • Mutational analysis using site directed mutagenesis. Cloning of genomic and cDNA for ectopic expression of genes at protein and mRNA levels, and designing of targeting vectors for genetic manipulations in cells and animals CRISPR and conventional methods. Nucleic acids sequencing.
  • Collect and maintain a prudent record of all experiments performed. Prepare scientific data, carry out data analysis and prepare manuscripts for publication. Participation and presentation of data in weekly lab meetings.
  • Responsible for day-to-day maintenance of lab and lab equipment, including ordering supplies, washing glassware, preparing reagents, etc.
  • Guides and directs junior technicians and students.
  • Remains current with all licensure, certifications and mandatory compliances and trainings required of this position.
  • Adhere to all policies, procedures and practices (Regents Rules, TTUS, HSECEP OPs, etc.).
  • Personally, and consistently, demonstrate, display and act in accordance with Texas Tech Health El Paso's Values (Service, Respect, Accountability, Integrity, Advancement, and Teamwork). Serve as a Value's leader while actively promoting and encouraging staff across the institution.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in biomedical sciences.
  • 1-2 years of experience with biomedical research techniques, including mammalian and primary cell culture, immunofluorescence staining, confocal microscopy, protein and nucleic-acid isolation, purification, quantitation, automated Western blotting, PCR/RT-PCR, cloning, sequencing, site-directed mutagenesis, and histological/IHC analysis of human and mouse tissues.
  • Experience working with laboratory animals, including breeding, maintaining mouse colonies, genotyping, and phenotype data collection (or willingness to work with research animals).
  • Demonstrated supervisory and organizational abilities in a research laboratory setting.
  • Proficiency with research-related software such as Microsoft Excel, GraphPad Prism, ImageJ, Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Ability to maintain accurate laboratory records and assist in preparing data presentations and scientific publications.

Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree or specialized academic training beyond the Bachelor's level in a particular field of science or engineering equivalent to a Master's degree.
