What You Will Do:

We are currently seeking a Structural Biologist to support the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The ideal candidate brings strong expertise in structural biology methods, independent data analysis, and effective collaboration with multidisciplinary research teams. This is a full-time, on-site opportunity in Bethesda, MD.

  • Process and analyze structural datasets, including but not limited to cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and X-ray crystallography data.
  • Refine structural models and interpret structural findings.
  • Apply antigen design and protein engineering tools to support scientific research projects.
  • Conduct structure prediction and modeling to inform experimental design.
  • Perform in vitro biochemical and biophysical assays to evaluate proteins and constructs.
  • Analyze experimental data and identify biologically relevant findings.
  • Identify, recommend, and implement new structure-related technologies to enhance VRC capabilities.
  • Develop, implement, and document standard operating procedures (SOPs) for structural prediction, protein design, and data visualization.
  • Collaborate with NIH investigators and multidisciplinary project teams to support ongoing research.
  • Provide scientific input and technical feedback on experimental approaches.
  • Prepare structural data and models for submission to public databases (e.g., Protein Data Bank, Electron Microscopy Data Bank).
  • Contribute to preparation of manuscripts, presentations, and scientific communications.
  • Collaborate with visualization teams to develop graphical or 3D representations of structural data for presentations and publications.

What You Will Need:

  • Ph.D. in Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Computational Biology, or a closely related biomedical field; OR Master's degree with a minimum of FOUR (4) years of experience in structural biology, biochemistry, biophysics, or related scientific research is equivalent to a Ph.D.
  • Demonstrated expertise in structural biology techniques, including cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and/or X-ray crystallography.
  • Ability to independently process cryo-EM and/or X-ray crystallography datasets, refine structures, and interpret results.
  • Experience applying antigen design and protein engineering tools.
  • Experience developing and implementing advanced structural biology methods and protocols.
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and organizational skills to support multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and scientific data tools.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Federal or DoD "public trust"; candidates must receive approved adjudication prior to onboarding with Guidehouse. Candidates with an active public trust or suitability are preferred.

  • Background working with viral glycoproteins and related structural analysis.
  • Exposure to vaccine or infectious disease research programs.
  • Familiarity with preparing and submitting data to public repositories such as PDB or EMDB.

The annual salary range for this position is $85,000.00-$141,000.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
