What is a BIM Automation Engineer?

BIM Automation Engineers are professionals who specialize in automating Building Information Modeling (BIM) processes within architectural, engineering, and construction projects. They develop scripts, tools, and workflows to streamline repetitive tasks, enhance collaboration, and improve project efficiency. Their expertise bridges the gap between design and technology, enabling teams to generate accurate building models, extract data, and optimize project outcomes. BIM Automation Engineers often work with software such as Revit, Dynamo, and other BIM platforms to deliver automation solutions tailored to project needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BIM Automation Engineer?

To thrive as a BIM Automation Engineer, you need strong expertise in Building Information Modeling (BIM), programming (such as Python or Dynamo), and a relevant degree in engineering or architecture. Familiarity with BIM software like Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and scripting or automation tools is typically required, along with certifications like Autodesk Certified Professional. Exceptional problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate and deliver innovative automation solutions. These skills ensure efficient project workflows, reduce manual errors, and drive productivity in construction and design projects.

How does a BIM Automation Engineer typically collaborate with architects and other project stakeholders?

A BIM Automation Engineer works closely with architects, engineers, and construction teams to streamline project workflows by developing scripts and tools that automate repetitive tasks within BIM software. They facilitate efficient data exchange, ensure model accuracy, and help resolve technical challenges that arise during the design and coordination phases. Regular meetings and ongoing communication are essential, as the engineer often customizes automation solutions to fit the specific needs of each stakeholder, promoting smoother project delivery and minimizing manual errors.

What is the difference between Bim Automation Engineer vs Bim Coordinator?

Job Details

Job Location: NEWPORT BEACH, CA 92660

Salary Range: $155,000.00 - $195,000.00 Salary/year

Exante360, Inc., is looking for a Director of BIM Technology and Digital Delivery that wants to join us on our bold initiative of “improving lives through relationships, by connecting people to solutions.”

Role

Exante360 is seeking a highly analytical, AI Forward and proactive Director of BIM technology & Digital Delivery to be the senior technical authority for BIM standards, Revit governance, digital QA/QC, model coordination, and technology-enabled project delivery. The position is responsible for creating a reliable and scalable BIM environment across the firm and connecting project-production needs with Exante360’s growing automation ecosystem.

This is a hands‑on technical leadership role. The Director must be capable of inspecting models, diagnosing complex issues, developing standards, validating workflows, and demonstrating solutions, not only assigning work or facilitating meetings.

Exante360 is building an AI‑forward organization. We are looking for professionals who embrace artificial intelligence, automation, and digital transformation as part of how they work. Ideal candidates are proactive in learning and applying new technologies, comfortable integrating AI tools into their workflow where appropriate, and capable of combining technology with sound business judgment to deliver exceptional results.

What You’ll DoBIM Standards and Governance
  • Own firmwide BIM standards, templates, families, parameters, shared coordinates, naming conventions, execution plans, and model-health requirements.
  • Establish a controlled process for developing, reviewing, approving, releasing, and maintaining BIM standards.
  • Define minimum BIM requirements by project type, client, delivery stage, and discipline.
  • Maintain a clear source of truth for current standards and approved content.
Quality Assurance and Technical Review
  • Develop and own BIM-specific QA/QC methodology.
  • Establish automated and human review checkpoints throughout project delivery.
  • Conduct or lead audits of models, drawing sets, coordination conditions, and standards compliance.
  • Identify recurring failures and convert lessons learned into standards, training, or automation.
  • Define measurable quality indicators and report trends to leadership.
Digital Delivery and Automation
  • Translate production pain points into business requirements for Orbit, Gyro360, and related tools.
  • Partner with leadership and Dev360 resources to test, validate, and prioritize BIM automation.
  • Evaluate Revit API, Dynamo, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Navisworks, and other digital‑delivery technologies.
  • Establish human‑review and governance requirements for automated outputs.
  • Build sustainable workflows rather than isolated scripts or one‑off solutions.
Advanced Technical Support
  • Serve as escalation point for complex Revit, model‑coordination, work‑sharing, interoperability, content, and performance issues.
  • Support critical project kickoffs and technically complex model setups.
  • Resolve issues that routine BIM support cannot address.
  • Remain sufficiently hands‑on to demonstrate technical competence and maintain credibility with production teams.
Training and Adoption
  • Develop structured training tied to actual Exante360 standards and project workflows.
  • Establish role‑based competency expectations.
  • Identify technical champions and create adoption plans for new standards and tools.
  • Capture training materials, decisions, demonstrations, and lessons learned for reuse.
  • Measure adoption rather than treating publication of a standard as completion.
Cross‑Discipline Coordination
  • Improve coordination among ICT, security, audiovisual, fire alarm, BIM, consultants, architects, and other design disciplines.
  • Develop workflows for clash detection, revision comparison, model federation, and milestone review.
  • Help convert Exante360’s technical expertise into repeatable digital‑delivery practices.
Education/Experience Requirements
  • At least 10 years of progressively responsible BIM, VDC, design-technology, or digital‑delivery experience.
  • Demonstrated firmwide ownership of BIM standards, templates, content, governance, and QA/QC.
  • Expert‑level proficiency in Revit and strong experience with Autodesk Construction Cloud and Navisworks.
  • Proven ability to personally diagnose and resolve advanced technical issues.
  • Experience implementing BIM across multiple projects, teams, or offices.
  • Experience developing and enforcing BIM execution plans.
  • Demonstrated automation literacy through Dynamo, Revit API workflows, plugins, scripting, or close collaboration with software developers.
  • Strong understanding of architectural and engineering document production.
  • Ability to communicate with executives, project managers, consultants, software developers, and production staff.
  • Demonstrated experience using AI, automation, data analytics, or other emerging technologies to improve efficiency, decision‑making, collaboration, or business outcomes.
  • ICT, telecommunications, security, audiovisual, healthcare technology, data‑center, or other low‑voltage design experience preferred.
  • Autodesk certification or equivalent demonstrable technical mastery preferred.
  • Experience integrating BIM standards with automated QA/QC preferred.
  • Prior digital‑practice, design‑technology, or technical‑director responsibility preferred.
  • Experience measuring adoption, quality improvement, and automation value preferred.
