Bike Shops information

What are bike shops?

Bike shops are retail stores that specialize in selling bicycles and related accessories, as well as providing repair and maintenance services. They offer a range of bikes, including road, mountain, hybrid, and electric models, to suit different needs and preferences. In addition to sales, bike shops often provide expert advice, fittings, and workshops to help customers choose the right bike and keep it in optimal condition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a bike shop mechanic, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bike Shop Mechanic, you need a solid understanding of bicycle mechanics, repair techniques, and product knowledge, often gained through hands-on experience or certification programs like those from the Barnett Bicycle Institute. Familiarity with specialized tools, repair stands, diagnostic equipment, and point-of-sale (POS) systems is typically required. Strong customer service, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork skills help you effectively communicate with clients and support shop operations. These skills ensure accurate repairs, satisfied customers, and the smooth running of daily bike shop activities.

What are some common challenges faced by employees working in bike shops, and how can they be addressed?

Employees in bike shops often encounter challenges such as keeping up with rapid advancements in bike technology, managing seasonal fluctuations in customer demand, and handling complex repairs efficiently. To address these, many shops provide ongoing training, encourage team collaboration, and implement clear processes for repair intake and communication with customers. Building strong product knowledge and staying updated on industry trends can also help employees deliver excellent service and adapt to changing customer needs.

Job description

A bit about us

Trek is an awesome place to work, with amazing benefits for all employees. We build only products we love, provide incredible hospitality to our customers, and change the world by getting more people on bikes. When you're on our team, you're taken care of, encouraged to learn and grow, and given lots of opportunities to do so. Give us your best, and we'll give it right back. Sound pretty sweet? Then come join us!

Job Description

Trek is looking for seasoned bikes mechanics to support either our Project One Factory at our HQ in Waterloo or our Red Barn Refresh program at our Distribution Center in Johnson Creek. These are full-time bicycle mechanic opportunities that are not customer facing and not in a retail environment. Instead, you will be wrenching on bikes full time with some of the best mechanics in the country while helping to get more people on bikes every day!
At the Trek Performance factory, we build the customers' dream bikes that inspire adventure, freedom, and the sheer joy of the ride. You'll play a key role in ensuring every bike meets our high standards for speed and quality. We're all about precision - you'll be responsible for assembling, tuning, and adjusting bikes with flawless accuracy. In the role, you will have the opportunity to work on both Project One custom bikes and built-to-stock Trek bikes.
At Red Barn, we build refurbished bikes that inspire adventure, freedom, and the sheer joy of the ride. You will not only have the opportunity to work on older model Trek bikes, but you will also get to build high-end road bikes, Rails, and Project One bikes.

What you'll bring to the team:

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience assembling a wide range of bikes-from kids' bikes to top-of-the-line mountain, road, and e-bikes.
  • A self-starter mentality with a passion for teamwork and a positive attitude that lifts up those around you.
  • A dedication to delivering awesome hospitality-listening, caring, and always being ready to help, no matter how busy the day gets.
  • An eye for detail and a love for finding solutions-whether it's troubleshooting or fine-tuning a bike until it's perfect.
  • A hunger to keep learning, growing your skills, and staying up to date on the latest technologies and service techniques.
  • Bike shop or bike assembly experience

Areas you'll own:

  • Completing the final assembly, tuning, and adjustment of a full spectrum of bikes.
  • Troubleshooting and updating e-bike systems and software.
  • Stepping in wherever needed to help us meet our goals and deliver outstanding service.

  • Monday to Friday
