Job description

Job Description:

The Estimator I supports the development of accurate, competitive bids for earthwork and site development projects, including mass grading, excavation, haul operations, site preparation, and related civil construction work. This is an entry-level estimating role designed for individuals early in their construction career who are ready to take ownership of portions of an estimate and contribute directly to bid success.

Working under the guidance of senior estimators and project managers, the Estimator I performs quantity takeoffs, solicits subcontractor and supplier pricing, develops scopes, crews, equipment, and production rates, and builds estimates within HeavyBid. The role works closely with project managers and field operations teams to understand how projects are constructed and apply field-driven knowledge to the estimating process.

Success in this position requires strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, adaptability, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced bidding environment. This role provides exposure to the full project lifecycle, from preconstruction through project execution, and serves as a foundational step toward an Estimator II or Project Manager/Estimator career path within Veit.

A Day in the Life

  • Gather, calculate quantities (square yard, linear feet, cubic yard, each, etc.) for each project to factor materials needed and material movement, and compile data for use in bid proposal estimates.
  • Solicits quotes from subcontractors for bid preparation and final numbers. Keeps DBE/MBE requirements in mind with subcontractor invitations to bid.
  • Collects quotes on materials required for the project.
  • Constructs the bid by adding activities (work to be completed), crews and equipment, adjusting production rates.
  • Prints out bid proposals to create proposal. Sends/delivers to owner or general contractor of each bid in the time frame required.
  • Determines results of bids by contacting General Contractors or communication from the bid runner for publicly awarded jobs.
  • Other duties or tasks as assigned by Management.

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) in Construction Management or Civil Engineering from four-year college or university; or minimum of 0-2 years' experience bidding and estimating projects or 5 years of related field experience; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Construction Bidding and Project Management software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to work with all levels of management, employees, external vendors, and other business associates. Must clearly communicate directions and information.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, clients, and/or regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to define problems, collect and document data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of situations and events and respond accordingly. Ability to seek counsel, when needed and use a variety of resources.
  • Ability to maintain compliance with all Veit policies and procedures.

  • Valid Driver's License and ability to maintain a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record.
  • Occasional travel and overnight stays to jobsites and client meetings (10%).

Work Environment
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those employees may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. Most often an office environment, however jobsite travel is required. Employee frequently works alone and with others. Frequently exposed to variable work environments, including unique conditions outside a typical office environment. Occasionally exposed to moving machinery, odors, dust, pressurized equipment. Occasionally exposed to electrical hazards. May be exposed to environmental conditions, loud noises, and variable weather including rain, snow, wind, cold, and heat.

Additional Job Description:

Base Compensation: $70,000 - $81,000

The base salary range may vary depending on geographic location, applicant skills, and prior relevant experience.
