What is a BI developer?

A business intelligence (BI) developer takes data and turns it into knowledge that a business or organization can use to carry out its goals. Their job is to use their data analysis skills and technical experience to develop solutions to problems, create technical reports, and make recommendations. By creating a data model or using other analytical tools, these developers can help increase productivity, provide improvements, or cut costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BI developer?

To thrive as a BI Developer, you need expertise in data modeling, SQL, and data warehousing concepts, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or SSRS, as well as experience with ETL processes and possibly certifications like Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate, is highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for translating business needs into actionable insights. These skills and qualifications enable BI Developers to deliver accurate reporting and analytics that drive informed business decisions.

What are some key challenges BI developers face when integrating data from multiple sources?

BI Developers often encounter challenges such as data inconsistency, varying data formats, and duplicate records when integrating data from different sources. Ensuring data quality and accuracy requires strong ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) skills and attention to detail. Collaborating closely with database administrators and business analysts is crucial to understand data structures and business requirements, which helps in designing effective data integration solutions. Overcoming these challenges not only improves reporting accuracy but also enhances decision-making across the organization.

Senior UX Designer

BI Worldwide

Edina, MN • Hybrid

$115K - $135K/yr

Full-time

Posted 27 days ago

Job description

At BI WORLDWIDE, we are committed to creating belongingness, where D&I is a priority. We invite you to join us as we continue to expand our culture of inclusivity, collaboration, and authenticity together.

We work a hybrid model (3 days in the office and 2 days work from home); this position is located in our Minneapolis Metro headquarters.

We're growing our UX practice by adding a Senior UX Designer to our Corporate Product Development team. This person will work alongside our current UX design lead (the primary/lead UX voice) partnering closely with product owners and application engineers to define and design features within our Figma design system. The role is senior enough to co-lead the practice and operate highly independently.

Responsibilities

  • Partners with product owners early in the feature lifecycle to clarify problems, define scope, and shape solutions before they move into detailed design
  • Designs engaging, intuitive, on-brand, functional user interfaces -- including flows, wireframes, and prototypes -- within the bounds of our Figma design system, which comprises three sub-design systems
  • Bridges business concepts and technical feasibility with well-crafted designs, and guides developers to implement them faithfully
  • Leads discussions between product owners, engineering, and other stakeholders to optimize usability, information architecture, and technical feasibility
  • Helps the team get ahead on the backlog by proactively defining and de-risking upcoming features, rather than only reacting to what's next in the queue
  • Writes and guides user stories and interprets them into designs
  • Leads user testing sessions and grows our broader UX research practice
  • Maintains, expands, and adapts our Figma design system and its sub-systems
  • Champions accessibility and internationalization in every design
  • Works in close partnership with our lead UX designer -- aligning to their vision and direction while co-leading initiatives and operating independently across your own areas of ownership
  • Explains design solutions and rationale to a wide range of stakeholders

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ensure an outstanding user experience, including reusability and consistency across products, while operating with a high degree of independence.

  • Creative problem solver who can translate ambiguous business needs and product owner input into concrete, well-defined software interfaces
  • Strong communication skills with business and technical partners -- listens well, grasps concepts at a fast pace, synthesizes business and technical input
  • Comfortable co-leading design direction alongside another designer -- aligning to a shared vision while independently owning your own feature areas
  • Working knowledge of UX research & testing methods (user interviews, usability testing, synthesis), with genuine interest in building out this practice (something we don't yet do)
  • Fluent in Figma, with real experience designing within multi-part, component-based design systems
  • Expertise in accessibility and internationalization best practices
  • Avid adopter of new design tools and techniques, aware of industry trends
  • Able to pivot based on feedback and changing business priorities

Education / Experience

  • 6+ years' experience UX design experience, including senior level responsibility for defining and designing product features end-to-end
  • Experience designing within a structured, component-based design system -- not just using one lightly
  • Experience designing a modern, feature-rich SaaS or enterprise software product
  • A portfolio that illustrates your approach to design, usability, and process -- not just final visuals

Base Salary Range: $115,000 to $135,000. The final salary and offer will be determined by the applicant's background, experience, and skills.
