Bgp Network Engineer information

What is a BGP network engineer?

A BGP Network Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and troubleshooting Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) in enterprise and service provider networks. They ensure optimal routing, maintain network stability, and prevent issues like route leaks or loops. The role often involves working with ISPs, configuring peering agreements, and optimizing traffic flow for efficiency and security. Strong knowledge of networking protocols, IP addressing, and routing policies is essential for this position.

What are some common challenges faced by BGP network engineers in their day-to-day work?

Bgp Network Engineers often encounter challenges such as diagnosing complex routing issues, mitigating network outages, and ensuring high availability across interconnected networks. They must be adept at quickly analyzing BGP route tables, managing policy changes, and responding to real-time incidents with minimal disruption to business services. Collaboration with other engineers, IT teams, and sometimes external service providers is common, especially during troubleshooting or network upgrades. Staying current with evolving networking technologies and best practices also helps address the challenges of maintaining secure, resilient networks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BGP network engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bgp Network Engineer, you need in-depth knowledge of BGP routing protocols, IP networking, troubleshooting, and network security, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with routers, switches, network monitoring tools, and certifications such as Cisco CCNP or Juniper JNCIP are highly valuable. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and strong communication skills help you excel in diagnosing issues and collaborating with other teams. These competencies ensure stable, secure, and efficient network operations in dynamic enterprise environments.

Job description

NETWORK ENGINEER SPECIALIST
Concurrent Technologies Corporation
Panama City, FL
Minimum Clearance Required: Secret
Clearance Level Must Be Able to Obtain: TS/SCI
This position provides basic support and ownership of moderately complex network assignments. The Network Engineer/Specialist applies technical and operational expertise to solve problems of moderate complexity, contributes to the completion of projects, and interfaces with internal and external customers. This role is ideal for candidates seeking to expand their technical skills and take on greater responsibility in network engineering within a DoD government contractor environment.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Network Design and Implementation:
    • Assist in the design and implementation of network solutions to meet operational requirements.
    • Configure and deploy network hardware and software, including routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless systems.
    • Conduct testing and validation of network configurations to ensure functionality and performance.
  • Network Monitoring and Troubleshooting:
    • Monitor network systems using tools such as SolarWinds or Wireshark to identify and resolve issues proactively.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve moderately complex network problems, including connectivity issues, performance bottlenecks, and security incidents.
    • Provide recommendations for network optimization and improvements.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain detailed documentation of network configurations, changes, and troubleshooting steps.
    • Prepare reports on network performance, incidents, and resolutions for management and stakeholders.
    • Contribute to the development of technical documentation, including user guides and SOPs.
  • Compliance and Security:
    • Ensure network systems comply with DoD cybersecurity standards and policies, including NIST 800-171 and RMF.
    • Implement security measures such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and encryption protocols.
    • Participate in audits and vulnerability assessments, providing input on remediation strategies.
  • Collaboration and Leadership:
    • Lead small teams on low-complexity network projects, ensuring tasks are completed on time and within scope.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support broader IT initiatives.
    • Mentor junior staff members, providing guidance and support to enhance their technical skills.

Manager Defined Field:
  • Provides comprehensive technical expertise across multiple disciplines, including network administration, cybersecurity, and data management. In support of limited-footprint client deployments, this role requires flexibility to perform cross-functional, out-of-scope technical duties to maintain system availability and operational readiness.
  • Hands-on experience supporting SD-WAN network administration, including configuration, deployment, and ongoing operational support.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience configuring and troubleshooting routing protocols (specifically BGP and OSPF) within an active, operational network environment.
  • Experience with working on next-generation firewalls.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience or equivalent work experience.
  • Additional years of experience may be considered in lieu of degree. Minimum of 4+ years of directly related experience is required for consideration.
  • Proficiency in networking concepts, including TCP/IP, DNS, VLANs, subnetting, and routing protocols (e.g., OSPF, BGP).
  • Experience with network monitoring tools and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Security+ Certification

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certifications such as CompTIA Network+, CCNA, or equivalent.
  • Experience with DoD network environments, protocols, and compliance standards (e.g., NIST 800-171, RMF).
  • Familiarity with advanced networking technologies, such as SD-WAN, VPNs, and cloud-based networking solutions.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity principles and practices, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and vulnerability management.

Work Environment/Conditions:
  • Essential Requirement: Travel to client's expeditionary afloat or ashore sites to support system deliveries or operations (up to 25% of the time).
