Job Description:
Schnabel Engineering is seeking a Geotechnical Engineering Department Manager to help expand our growing geo-professional services in our Lakewood, CO office. In this role, you will provide technical leadership, project management, business development, and supervision and mentorship for junior staff for the expansion of geotechnical, geostructural and geophysical services in the Rocky Mountain region. Client development will generally focus on Power/Energy providers, Transportation, Water Infrastructure, and Public Sector entities. This expanding group will also support our existing work in water resources including dams and reservoirs, flood resiliency, and heavy-civil works related to tunnels and mining. We're looking for a motivated candidate with a keen eye for detail, a dedication to ongoing professional growth, and a passion for joining a collaborative, inclusive team working on complex projects at the forefront of our industry. Job Responsibilities:
  • Participate in and support the cohesive, positive culture in our Lakewood office and company-wide, to cultivate a best-in-class environment that allows our people to realize their full potential.
  • Serve as direct supervisor responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the geotechnical department including performing, supervising, and reviewing engineering work; hiring; staff development; and mentoring with the support of the local Branch Leader, Geostructural Practice Leader, and Regional Business Unit Leaders.
  • Work with the local Branch Leader, Regional Business Unit Leaders, and Market Pursuit Directors to develop and implement a market growth strategy for geo-professional services in the Rocky Mountain Region, in alliance with our Boise, Helena, Seattle, Portland and Sacramento offices.
  • Expand our local geo-professional services by adding new clients, building upon current client relationships and following major regional programs and funding streams.
  • Develop, manage, and oversee the execution of geotechnical and geologic field investigations; review field investigation results; assign project-specific soil and rock laboratory testing; evaluate instrumentation and monitoring data; perform geotechnical engineering analyses, develop geotechnical recommendations, review geotechnical aspects of plans and specifications, and provide geotechnical engineering support during construction.
  • Collaborate across offices, business units and disciplines to deliver integrated, value-driven solutions.

Required Skills/Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree (Master's Degree preferred) in Geotechnical and/or Civil Engineering, or related fields.
  • 10+ years of experience in the geotechnical engineering field.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in CO or the ability to obtain licensure within 6 months.
  • Proven track record in winning work, technical excellence and building and developing highly effective teams.
  • Extensive geotechnical background, including a strong fundamental knowledge of principles of geotechnical and geostructural engineering.
  • Strong technical background using various geotechnical and computer-aided design software, such as GeoStudio Suite, Rocscience Suite including Settle3D, gINT/OpenGround, APILE, LPILE, SHAFT, GROUP, CWALSHT, PYWall, Snail, Shoring Suite, STAAD Pro, and AutoCAD/Civil 3D.
  • Effective time management through balancing multiple concurrent tasks, responsibilities, and commitments.
  • Analytical skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Organized, self-starter, and entrepreneurial, with a strong team-oriented mindset.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel with some overnight travel.

  • Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record, and credit check.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment screening.

The compensation range for this position is between $125,000 to $140,000. Compensation for this position may vary based on geographic location and other factors. We remain committed to providing competitive and equitable compensation to all employees, regardless of their location.
