What is a BESS engineer?

A BESS Engineer is a professional who specializes in the design, implementation, and maintenance of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). These engineers work on integrating battery storage solutions with renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind, to improve energy reliability and grid stability. Their responsibilities may include system modeling, project management, safety compliance, and performance optimization. BESS Engineers play a crucial role in advancing clean energy technologies and supporting the transition to sustainable power systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BESS engineer?

To thrive as a BESS Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, energy storage technologies, and system integration, often supported by an engineering degree and relevant experience. Familiarity with SCADA systems, battery management software, and certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) or relevant safety credentials is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable design and operation of battery energy storage solutions in the rapidly evolving energy sector.

How does a BESS engineer typically collaborate with project managers and electricians during the deployment of battery energy storage systems?

A BESS Engineer frequently works closely with project managers to ensure that project timelines, budgets, and technical specifications are met throughout the deployment process. They coordinate with electricians and installation teams to oversee system integration, troubleshoot onsite issues, and verify that all electrical connections and safety standards are adhered to. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as the BESS Engineer often acts as a technical liaison between the design phase and hands-on implementation, ensuring smooth project execution.

What is the difference between Bess Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectBess EngineerMechanical Engineer

Work EnvironmentRenewable energy projects, power plants, energy storage facilitiesManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, energy sectors
Industry UsageEnergy storage, renewable energy, power systemsMechanical design, manufacturing, HVAC, automotive

The main difference between a Bess Engineer and a Mechanical Engineer lies in their specialization. Bess Engineers focus on energy storage systems and renewable energy projects, requiring specific knowledge of battery energy storage technologies. Mechanical Engineers have a broader scope, working on mechanical systems across various industries. While both roles require engineering degrees, their work environments and industry applications differ significantly.

How to become a BESS engineer?

To become a BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) engineer, you typically need a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field. Gaining experience with power systems, battery technologies, and control systems, along with certifications in relevant areas such as project management or electrical safety, can enhance your qualifications. Familiarity with industry standards and hands-on experience with BESS design, installation, or maintenance are also valuable.

Job description

About Torus
Torus is headquartered in Utah and is expanding manufacturing at our 545,000-square-foot facility in Salt Lake City called GigaOne. We are the world's first mesh energy infrastructure, uniting communities through resilient, sustainable, and intelligent power. We design, engineer, manufacture, install, and support our systems end-to-end, standing behind them throughout their lifecycle. Torus systems help reduce costs, lower emissions, and protect facilities from outages, while strengthening the security and reliability of the broader utility grid. Torus is committed to American manufacturing, engineering excellence, and building energy systems that last.
Torus has raised over $267 million from investors like Magnetar, Mercado, ICONIQ and Origin Ventures. The investments are helping to accelerate deployment of modular power plants across utilities, data centers, and industrial sectors. This investor confidence reflects the strength of our team, technology as well as the scale of the problem we are solving.
At Torus, you will be part of something larger than a single product or technology. Your work will help build energy infrastructure that supports and strengthens our electrical grid, critical systems, industry, and communities for decades to come. We value accountability, collaboration, and clear thinking. We are looking for people who want to solve hard problems and build things that matter.
About the Role
The Supply Chain Analyst will play a critical role in supporting our R&D and Engineering teams by ensuring timely and cost-effective sourcing of electrical components and machined parts. This is mission critical for developing and supporting the next generation of Torus products. The role will report to the Director of Supply Chain and work closely with cross-functional teams, including Design Engineering, Manufacturing, and Finance, to develop and implement a reliable supply base for critical components used in our BESS (Torus Pulse) and FESS (Torus Spin) systems. The ideal candidate will bring experience in sourcing within the electrical components domain, preferably with exposure to machine shops and custom fabricated parts.
Torus operates in a fast-paced and evolving environment, and this role will require adaptability and a willingness to take on responsibilities beyond typical duties when needed.
Responsibilities
  • Identify, qualify, and manage suppliers for electrical and electromechanical components.
  • Support R&D and Engineering in finding sources for prototype and low-volume production parts.
  • Drive cost reduction initiatives while maintaining quality and lead time targets.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key suppliers to ensure long-term strategic partnerships.
  • Negotiate pricing, delivery terms, and contracts with suppliers.
  • Manage RFQs, evaluate bids, and make supplier recommendations based on total cost of ownership.
  • Monitor supplier performance using key metrics (e.g., on-time delivery, quality, cost competitiveness).
  • Collaborate with Design Engineering to ensure component specifications are well understood by suppliers.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends in electrical components and machining services.
  • Complete other tasks as necessary.

Required Experience
  • 5+ years of experience in sourcing, procurement, or supply chain roles, with an emphasis on electrical components and/or machined parts.
  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field or a combination of relevant experience and/or education.
  • Experience using NetSuite ERP system or a similar (e.g. SAP, Epicor, etc.) software.
  • Demonstrated experience sourcing custom fabricated parts and working directly with machine shops.
  • Familiarity with electrical components such as relays, connectors, switches, PCBs, harnesses, and power electronics.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes including machining, sheet metal fabrication, and assembly.
  • Experience supporting engineering development and NPI (New Product Introduction) sourcing efforts.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and project management skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Experience
  • Experience partnering with NetSuite system experts to set up and optimize system workflows is highly preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

You'll be a great fit if you have a passion for helping to solve complex climate challenges and are committed to finding new innovative ways to preserve and enhance our planet. As a member of a rapidly growing startup with an excitement to learn new technologies, you'll add incredible value as a self-starter and apply your technical skills to empower our customers to discover, purchase, and install the Torus products that will help them live clean, renewable lives.
