Position Summary
Sinai Chicago is seeking an experienced Director of Risk Management to lead and oversee the organization's comprehensive risk management program. Reporting directly to the General Counsel, this leadership role is responsible for safeguarding Sinai Health System's assets, operations, and reputation through proactive risk assessment, loss prevention, insurance management, litigation oversight, and regulatory compliance initiatives.
The Director of Risk Management will collaborate closely with executive leadership, operational departments, legal counsel, compliance teams, and clinical stakeholders to identify, evaluate, and mitigate organizational risks while supporting the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) strategy.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and administer a system-wide Risk Management Program.
  • Analyze risk data, identify trends, and develop mitigation strategies to reduce organizational exposure.
  • Lead insurance and risk financing programs, including policy management and claims oversight.
  • Oversee litigation management in partnership with legal counsel and external stakeholders.
  • Conduct annual enterprise-wide risk assessments and recommend corrective action plans.
  • Develop and facilitate risk management education and training programs for staff and leadership.
  • Partner with executive leadership to support strategic risk management initiatives.
  • Provide guidance on regulatory, compliance, and risk-related matters affecting the organization.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Compliance Officer and Enterprise Risk Counsel to execute the Enterprise Risk Management Plan.
  • Participate in the development and review of organizational policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Maintain current knowledge of federal, state, and local healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and industry best practices.
  • Foster strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including insurance carriers, legal partners, clinical leaders, and professional organizations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
  • Minimum of 3 years of healthcare experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare operations and risk management principles.
  • Excellent verbal, written, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated business acumen with the ability to balance strategic objectives and operational needs.
  • Ability to assess risk and recommend effective mitigation strategies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
Preferred
  • Experience in healthcare risk management.
  • Experience managing insurance programs and litigation matters.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state healthcare regulations, including:
    • HIPAA Privacy and Security requirements
    • Medicare and Medicaid regulations
    • Healthcare accreditation standards
    • Non-discrimination and regulatory compliance requirements

They will possess strong relationship-building skills, sound judgment, and the ability to communicate effectively with executives, physicians, clinical teams, and external partners.

  • Occasional travel throughout the health system may be required.
Physical Requirements
  • Regularly required to sit, communicate, and utilize standard office equipment.
  • Occasionally required to stand and move throughout facilities.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Requires close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Exposure Classification
Blood-Borne Pathogen Exposure Category 3
This position does not involve routine exposure to blood, body fluids, non-intact skin, or tissue specimens and does not require participation in emergency medical care or first aid activities.
