How much do behavior therapist training provided jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 17, 2026, the average hourly pay for behavior therapist training provided in the United States is $22.94, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.23 and $23.80 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a behavior therapist do, and what does training provided mean?

A Behavior Therapist works with individuals, often children with autism or other developmental disorders, to help them develop positive behaviors and reduce challenging ones using evidence-based techniques like Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). 'Training provided' means that employers will teach you the specific methods and skills needed for the job, so you don't need prior experience or certification to start. This typically includes classroom instruction, hands-on practice, and supervised sessions, ensuring you are prepared to work effectively with clients. Most positions require a high school diploma or equivalent, and ongoing training or certification may be offered as you gain experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a behavior therapist, and why are they important?

To excel as a Behavior Therapist with training provided, you need a bachelor's degree in psychology, education, or a related field, along with a strong interest in behavioral analysis and therapy for individuals with developmental or behavioral challenges. Familiarity with data collection software, ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) techniques, and session documentation tools is typically gained during on-the-job training. Patience, strong communication skills, and empathy are crucial soft skills for building rapport and motivating clients. These competencies are vital for effectively implementing therapy plans, tracking progress, and fostering positive behavioral changes in clients.

What are some common challenges new behavior therapists face when starting out, and how can they overcome them?

New behavior therapists often encounter challenges such as building rapport with clients, managing difficult behaviors, and accurately implementing intervention plans under supervision. To overcome these hurdles, it's important to actively seek feedback from experienced colleagues, participate in regular training sessions, and maintain open communication with your supervising Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Developing strong observation and documentation skills early on will also help ensure you’re providing effective, consistent support to clients as you grow in the role.
