Before School Software Engineering Internships information

What is a before school software engineering internship?

Before School Software Engineering Internships are internship opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience in software engineering before they officially begin their university education, typically during high school or in the gap between high school and college. These internships allow aspiring engineers to work on real-world coding projects, learn from industry professionals, and develop technical and professional skills early. They can be a great way to build a resume, explore career interests, and gain insights into the software industry before committing to a college major or program.

What do software engineering interns do before school starts?

Software engineering interns who begin their internships before the school year often work on real-world projects that support ongoing development efforts. Common tasks include writing and testing code, debugging existing applications, participating in code reviews, and collaborating with full-time engineers on feature development. Interns may also be involved in documentation and learning company-specific tools and workflows. These responsibilities provide valuable hands-on experience and help interns build their technical and teamwork skills early in their careers.

What skills and qualifications are needed for a before school software engineering internship?

To thrive as a Software Engineering Intern before starting school, you should have a basic understanding of programming concepts, problem-solving abilities, and familiarity with at least one programming language such as Python or Java. Exposure to version control systems like Git and online coding platforms, along with relevant coursework or coding bootcamps, is often beneficial. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and teamwork skills help you adapt quickly and contribute effectively in a professional environment. These skills and qualities are essential for building foundational technical expertise, collaborating with others, and maximizing the value of the internship experience.

We operate in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment focused on technical rigor, continuous learning, and high code quality. As an intern, you will contribute to real engineering work that helps shape how Appian delivers its AI-powered Process Automation platform to enterprises around the world.

As a Software Engineering Intern, you will build on your academic foundation and gain hands-on experience contributing to production-adjacent engineering work. You will be embedded within a small, high-performing team where you'll learn how modern enterprise software is designed, built, tested, and shipped at scale. You will also work alongside engineers who leverage cutting-edge AI tooling to accelerate development while maintaining strong standards for quality and correctness.
