Job description

Job Summary:
The Upward Bound Tutor provides academic support services to eligible Upward Bound participants through individual tutoring, small group instruction, study skills development, and educational encouragement. The Tutor assists participants in strengthening academic performance, increasing college readiness, developing effective learning strategies, and achieving educational goals. This position supports the mission and objectives of the Upward Bound Program by helping first-generation and low-income students prepare for postsecondary education success.
This position is funded through the federal Upward Bound grant and is governed by state and federal laws and institution policy.
Compensation: $15 per hour.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Tutors will report to the Upward Bound Director or other designated UB staff for direction and needs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Academic Support
  • Provide individual and small-group tutoring in assigned academic subjects.
  • Reinforce classroom concepts using effective instructional strategies.
  • Assist participants with homework assignments, projects, and academic skill development.
  • Adapt tutoring approaches to accommodate diverse learning styles and educational needs.
  • Utilize educational technology and online resources to support student learning.
  • Encourage critical thinking, problem solving, and independent learning skills.

Study Skills and Academic Coaching
  • Teach effective note-taking, organization, test preparation, and time-management strategies.
  • Promote academic habits that support student persistence and achievement.
  • Assist participants in setting realistic academic goals.
  • Encourage consistent class attendance and assignment completion.

College Readiness Support

  • Support program data collection efforts as requested.

Professional Conduct and Compliance
  • Maintain confidentiality of participant records and information.
  • Follow South Arkansas College policies, Upward Bound procedures, and applicable federal regulations.
  • Complete required institutional and program training.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and ethical conduct.

Student Safety
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and supervised learning environment.
  • Follow institutional procedures regarding minors participating in program activities.
  • Report incidents, concerns, or safety issues through appropriate channels.

Other Duties
  • Support special events, workshops, field experiences, and educational activities as assigned.
  • Perform other duties related to the goals and objectives of the Upward Bound Program as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
Demonstrated academic proficiency in the subject area being tutored; or completion of at least 60 college credit hours with demonstrated academic success in the tutoring discipline; or bachelor's degree in an appropriate academic discipline.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Education or an academic content area; Previous experience with TRIO, GEAR UP, AVID, or similar college access programs; Experience tutoring high school students; Experience working with first-generation, low-income, or underrepresented student populations; Secondary teaching certification or equivalent instructional experience.
Physical Requirements:
The work requires prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, speaking, and using computers and educational technology. Occasional lifting and carrying of materials up to 20 pounds may be required.
