What is a BCBA or RBT?

BCBA stands for Board Certified Behavior Analyst, a graduate-level certification for professionals who design and supervise behavior analysis services, often for individuals with autism or other developmental disorders. RBT stands for Registered Behavior Technician, a paraprofessional who implements behavior analysis services under the supervision of a BCBA or similar credentialed individual. BCBAs are responsible for assessing clients, developing treatment plans, and overseeing the work of RBTs, who provide direct therapy and support to clients. Together, they form a team that delivers evidence-based interventions to improve clients' behaviors and skills.

How do BCBA and RBT typically collaborate in a clinical setting?

BCBAs and RBTs work closely together to deliver effective Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services. The BCBA is responsible for designing, overseeing, and modifying individualized treatment plans, while RBTs implement the direct interventions with clients under the BCBA’s supervision. Regular communication is essential; BCBAs provide ongoing training, feedback, and support to RBTs to ensure fidelity to treatment protocols. This collaborative relationship fosters a team-oriented environment focused on client progress and professional development for both roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BCBA or RBT?

To thrive as a BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) or RBT (Registered Behavior Technician), you need a solid understanding of applied behavior analysis (ABA), data collection, and relevant credentials—BCBA requires a master's degree and certification, while RBT requires completion of a training program and passing a competency assessment. Familiarity with ABA software, behavior tracking systems, and electronic data entry tools is commonly expected. Strong communication, patience, and problem-solving skills help professionals build rapport with clients and work effectively on multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering effective behavioral interventions and achieving positive client outcomes.

Job description

At Horizon Blue, we're focused on making sure BCBAs can show up for the kids and families who need them. Our BCBAs work with 8-10 families, with caseloads built around what each child actually needs rather than billing targets. We collaborate weekly, receive clinical mentorship, and help guide RBT placements. The goal is to create space for BCBAs to thoughtfully support each child's progress and be present when families need them.
We're a mostly remote team, which takes intention. But it also means our BCBAs have more time to focus on the clinical work that matters: adjusting programming as a child grows, supporting parents through challenges, and coaching the RBTs working with kids daily. We keep learning what works by listening to our team about what helps them serve families well.
BCBA Qualifications & Requirements:
  • Master's Degree in Applied Behavior Analysis or related field
  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) required
  • NY Licensed Behavior Analyst required
  • 1+ years of experience in ABA
  • Medicaid ID from New York State
  • Preference for Bilingual BCBAs in English & Spanish
  • Develop and oversee individualized ABA treatment plans.
  • Supervise RBTs and provide ongoing training and support.
  • Conduct assessments and adjust treatment goals as needed.
  • Collaborate with families and multidisciplinary teams to ensure client success.
  • Maintain compliance with ethical and regulatory standards.

BCBA Benefits & Schedule:
  • Flexible Scheduling and Case Assignment
  • 100% Remote
  • Competitive W2 or 1099 Compensation
  • $60k base for 15 hours per week in billables, then $80-$90/hour for hours above 15 hours per week in billables.
  • Offers BOE

$60,000 - $100,000 a year
