What is the difference between Bayesian Optimization vs Data Scientist?

AspectBayesian OptimizationData Scientist
Primary FocusOptimizing complex functions and hyperparametersAnalyzing data, building models, deriving insights
Required SkillsStatistics, probability, machine learning, programmingStatistics, programming, data analysis, visualization
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, AI/ML teams, R&D departmentsBusiness, tech companies, consulting firms
Common ToolsPython, R, Bayesian libraries (e.g., GPy, scikit-optimize)Python, R, SQL, visualization tools

Bayesian Optimization is a specialized technique used within machine learning and AI to efficiently tune hyperparameters or optimize functions. Data Scientists often utilize Bayesian Optimization as part of their toolkit but have broader responsibilities, including data analysis, modeling, and reporting. While Bayesian Optimization focuses on optimization tasks, Data Scientists work on understanding and interpreting data to inform business decisions.

Job description

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.

Joby Aviation is seeking a passionate & experienced thermal engineer to join our Powertrain team in San Carlos, CA to support development of the Joby S4 aircraft. In addition to building & verifying simulations, as thermal attribute owners we bring cross-functional teams together to highlight sensitivities, inform trade studies, and drive optimal designs. This role will primarily support the Electric Propulsion Unit, Energy Storage & Distribution System, System Electronics, & Electrical System Installation teams.

  • Determine appropriate modeling complexity to support critical designs, program decisions, & project timelines
  • Build & validate models supporting system optimization, performance, & trade studies
  • Brings key stakeholders & function groups together to drive solutions to complex problems
  • Build coalitions with key stakeholders & functional groups to drive solutions to completion

  • 5+ years of industry experience & post-graduate degree, or demonstrated equivalent
  • Successful track record of bringing products to market & managing project deliverables
  • Strong fundamentals in thermodynamics, aerodynamics, & data analysis
  • Direct experience building lumped-parameter thermal network models
  • Working knowledge of at least one CFD analysis toolkit such as STAR-CCM, OpenFOAM, Ansys, etc.
  • Familiarity with at least one scripting language & optimization toolkit
  • Ability to be onsite at our San Carlos, CA facility

  • 10+ years of industry experience with STAR-CCM and 3DX (CATIA)
  • Proficiency in Python, Matlab, & Simulink
  • Experience with Databricks
  • Competence in R-value tuning, RMSE minimization, Bayesian optimization, thermal neural networks, & posterior probability sensitivity analysis
  • Postgraduate qualification & relevant work experience in aviation or automotive industries
  • Expertise in fan impeller design, aeroacoustics modeling, or refrigeration/thermal system control design

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $131,000 - $222,000/yr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Joby also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan with a company match, an employee stock purchase plan (ESPP), short-term and long-term disability coverage, life insurance, and more.
