Location: Dugway Proving Ground
Summary: Under direct supervision of the HVAC Lead. Install, maintain and repair environmental-control systems in real property facilities and equipment utilizing knowledge of refrigeration theory, pipefitting, and structural layout. Mount compressor and condenser units on platform or floor. Fabricate, assemble, and install ductwork/chassis parts, using portable metalworking tools and welding equipment. Install evaporator unit in chassis or in air-duct system. Cut and bend tubing, using cutting and bending equipment and tools. Cut and thread pipe, using machine-threading or hand threading equipment. Join tubing or pipe to various refrigerating units by means of sleeves, couplings or unions and solder joints, using torch, forming complete circuit for refrigerant. Connect, maintain, repair, replace motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls and circulating ventilation fans to control panels and connect control panels to power source. Install, replace, air, and water filters. Inject small amount of refrigerant into compressor test systems, and add Freon gas to build up prescribed operating pressure. Observe pressure and vacuum gauges and adjust controls to insure proper operation. Test joints and connections for gas leaks, using gauges or soap-and-water solution. Qualifications: Completion of basic and advanced HVAC course and/or six (6) years' experience in installation, repair, servicing of electrical generation distribution systems, Journeyman certification.
Education Required: High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent work experience.
Licenses & Certifications required:
Journeyman Level certification
Universal Refrigerant Certification
Purpose of Classification: Service, repair, and maintain HVAC systems for the West Desert Shop in accordance with the Dugway Proving Ground PWS.
Duties & Responsibilities:
• Accomplish work in compliance with government regulations and all building codes
• Identify material requirement listing for work in government acceptable format
• Assist in maintaining shop inventory
• Maintain required readings, records, and documentation
• Research and identify material
• Operate general purpose vehicles
• Operate equipment, machinery, and test equipment related to electric and HVAC systems
• Accomplish work as identified from blue prints, drawings, models, schematics, or verbal instructions, using a variety of measuring instruments, making standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work
• Perform safe work practices and procedures, and adhere to occupational health standards
• Maintain air compressors and components
• Perform related duties as required
Special Knowledge / Skills Required:
• Must be able to meet eligibility requirements to obtain and maintain the required government security clearance
• Proficient in use of electrical and HVAC hand tools, portable power tools, gauges, equipment, and vehicles
• Knowledgeable in national, government and state HVAC standards and codes
• Certified as required by 40CFR to properly handle, transfer, recover, reclaim, and dispose of refrigerant
• Must possess valid State Driver's License.
