LG Energy Solution Michigan Inc. (LGESMI) develops and manufactures large lithium-ion polymer batteries and packs for electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage applications. Come join the leader in advanced EV batteries! www.lgenergymi.com

Summary: The Senior Engineer, Battery Packaging Equipment is an ESMI-based engineer responsible for providing specialized technical support to LG Energy Solution and affiliated manufacturing entities throughout North America.

This position supports the installation, commissioning, startup, model changeover, production stabilization, troubleshooting, and optimization of lithium-ion battery packaging equipment. The Engineer serves as a technical expert in ultrasonic and laser welding processes used in pouch-cell battery manufacturing.

The Engineer travels to North American manufacturing sites to resolve complex equipment and process issues, support new-line launches and production ramp-ups, standardize effective technical practices, and transfer specialized knowledge to locally hired engineers and technicians.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide advanced technical support for battery packaging equipment at ESMI and other LG Energy Solution or affiliated North American manufacturing entities.
  • Lead or support equipment installation, mechanical checkout, commissioning, startup, trial production, and production stabilization.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, pneumatic, welding, equipment, and process-related issues that cannot be addressed through routine maintenance procedures.
  • Develop, validate, and optimize ultrasonic and laser welding parameters for thin-foil pouch-cell battery applications.
  • Analyze welding defects, equipment downtime, and process variation; conduct root-cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support product model changeovers by evaluating equipment requirements, adjusting tooling and process parameters, and validating readiness for mass production.
  • Provide on-site support during new plant launches, line ramp-ups, major equipment disruptions, quality incidents, and other critical manufacturing events.
  • Review mechanical drawings, fabrication drawings, pneumatic diagrams, equipment layouts, and technical specifications.
  • Recommend and implement equipment modifications and process improvements to improve equipment reliability, product quality, production yield, and cycle time.
  • Coordinate technical activities with manufacturing, maintenance, quality, process engineering, equipment suppliers, contractors, and engineering teams across multiple entities.
  • Document equipment settings, troubleshooting results, corrective actions, lessons learned, and standardized work procedures.
  • Train and mentor locally hired engineers, technicians, and maintenance personnel through hands‑on demonstrations, technical instruction, and supervised field practice.
Required Skills:
  • Advanced knowledge of lithium-ion battery packaging equipment installation, commissioning, startup, and production stabilization.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills involving packaging machinery, mechanical assemblies, pneumatic systems, sensors, actuators, tooling, and related process interfaces.
  • Expertise in ultrasonic and laser welding systems used in pouch‑cell or comparable thin‑foil manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to establish and optimize welding parameters, evaluate welding defects, and connect equipment conditions with product quality and yield.
  • Strong root‑cause analysis, corrective‑action, and continuous‑improvement capabilities.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, 2D fabrication drawings, pneumatic diagrams, equipment specifications, and technical manuals.
  • Working proficiency with Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, or comparable mechanical design software.
  • Strong technical documentation and reporting skills.
  • Ability to provide hands‑on technical training and transfer specialized equipment knowledge to local engineers and technicians.
  • Ability to work effectively across multiple sites, corporate entities, cultures, and technical functions.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required. An associate or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, mechatronics, industrial technology, or a related field is preferred but may be substituted with substantial directly relevant experience.
  • At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience with lithium‑ion battery packaging equipment, automated manufacturing equipment, or closely related production systems.
  • Demonstrated hands‑on experience with equipment installation, commissioning, production startup, ramp‑up, troubleshooting, and stabilization.
  • Demonstrated experience with ultrasonic or laser welding processes used in lithium‑ion battery or thin‑foil manufacturing.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing operations at multiple facilities or international project locations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English in technical and operational settings.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently throughout North America.
  • Ability to work flexible or extended hours during commissioning, production ramp‑up, emergency troubleshooting, and other critical project periods.
Benefits Overview:
  • 100% employer‑paid Medical, Dental, and Vision premiums for you and your family
  • 100% employer‑paid disability and life insurance
  • Generous Paid Time Off / Holidays
  • Opportunity to grow in a diverse work environment with a global company
  • 401k Retirement savings and planning with a generous company match
