What is a battery modeling engineer?

Battery Modeling Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and optimize mathematical models that simulate the behavior and performance of batteries. They use these models to predict battery life, efficiency, safety, and performance under various conditions, helping to improve battery technology for applications like electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and renewable energy storage. Their work often involves collaborating with chemists, electrical engineers, and software developers to create accurate simulations and guide the development of new battery technologies.

How does a battery modeling engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in the development process?

Battery Modeling Engineers frequently work alongside electrochemists, hardware engineers, and data scientists to develop and refine battery systems. They translate experimental data and design requirements into simulation models, ensuring alignment between theoretical predictions and real-world performance. Effective communication and regular meetings are essential, as Battery Modeling Engineers often provide critical insights that inform design decisions, troubleshooting, and optimization of battery performance. This collaborative environment fosters innovation and helps accelerate product development cycles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a battery modeling engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Battery Modeling Engineer, you need a strong background in electrochemistry, physics, and advanced mathematics, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Proficiency in simulation tools such as COMSOL Multiphysics, MATLAB, and Python, along with familiarity with battery management systems, is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate and solve complex battery performance challenges. These skills are crucial for designing accurate models that drive innovation and efficiency in battery technology.

What is the difference between Battery Modeling Engineer vs Battery Test Engineer?

AspectBattery Modeling EngineerBattery Test Engineer
CredentialsDegree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering; knowledge of modeling softwareDegree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering; experience with testing equipment
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, simulation environments, R&D departmentsTesting labs, quality assurance, product validation
Industry UsageBattery development, simulation, and optimizationProduct testing, validation, and quality control

Job description

Racing is where our story began.
In 1901, Henry Ford climbed into a car he built himself "Sweepstakes" and beat America's most famous driver. He wasn't a racer, but he had to win. He did. Ford Motor Company was born from that victory.
That fighting spirit lives on in Ford Racing today. We're the engineers, strategists, and competitors who bring Ford's track-tested edge into every vehicle we build. Every track, every stage, every proving ground that's where we prove ourselves.
The result: one of the world's most iconic brands, legendary nameplates, and a team unmatched in the industry.
Our mantra: Race to win, engineer to lead.
If you're a competitor, innovator, or performance obsessive, Ford Racing is where you belong. Help us write the next chapter.
In this position...
You'll work at the intersection of battery chemistry, data, and competition turning test results into physics-based models that translate into faster lap times. If you love seeing your work make a measurable impact, this is where that happens.
You'll be part of a small, high-performing motorsports team where ownership is high, ideas are tested fast, and continuous improvement is the mission.
You'll apply your modeling expertise to Ford Racing's current battery systems, then set the direction for future methods and battery designs.
Responsibilities
What you'll do...
  • Build and refine electrochemical models using tools like MATLAB and COMSOL to drive future development and guide decisions on cell chemistry and format direction.
  • Build and refine thermal and equivalent circuit models using tools like GT-Suite and Simulink to predict how battery cells will perform under real track conditions.
  • Work with array design engineers to shape how cells integrate into the battery array, informing cooling methods and heat rejection designs for optimum system efficiency.
  • Provide technical expertise to a global team of internal and external stakeholders spanning Ford Racing production and motorsport vehicles.
  • Guide testing strategies to ensure data needed for models are generated effieciently. Define requirements for battery management systems as they relate to cell state estimation, life, and operational efficiency.

Qualifications
You'll have...
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field: Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a relevant field
  • 2+ years of direct experience modeling Li-Ion battery cells
  • Competency in relevant engineering software (e.g., COMSOL, GT-Suite, Python, MATLAB Simulink)
  • Working knowledge of battery cell test methods, chemistry, and key design parameters
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally, as required

Even better, you may have...
  • Master's / Ph. D in a related field: Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a relevant field
  • Experience with 3D heterogeneous chemistry modeling
  • Hands-on experience producing lab-scale Li-Ion battery cells
  • High Voltage Safety Training
  • Competitive spirit and interest in professional motorsports

You may not check every box, or your experience may look a little different from what we've outlined, but if you think you can bring value to Ford Motor Company, we encourage you to apply!
As an established global company, we offer the benefit of choice. You can choose what your Ford future will look like: will your story span the globe, or keep you close to home? Will your career be a deep dive into what you love, or a series of new teams and new skills? Will you be a leader, a changemaker, a technical expert, a culture builder...or all of the above? No matter what you choose, we offer a work life that works for you, including:
  • Immediate medical, dental, vision and prescription drug coverage
  • Flexible family care days, paid parental leave, new parent ramp-up programs, subsidized back-up child care and more
  • Family building benefits including adoption and surrogacy expense reimbursement, fertility treatments, and more
  • Vehicle discount program for employees and family members and management leases
  • Tuition assistance
  • Established and active employee resource groups
  • Paid time off for individual and team community service
  • A generous schedule of paid holidays, including the week between Christmas and New Year's Day
