Job description

Job Title: Machine Operator

Job Description

This role operates within a team-based manufacturing environment to produce specialty plastic compounds. You will set up, run, and monitor extrusion equipment while maintaining high standards of efficiency, cleanliness, safety, and product quality. The position involves hands-on machine operation, careful review of production documentation, and proactive housekeeping and safety practices.

Responsibilities

  • Determine production requirements by reading and implementing general and special instructions on each sales order.
  • Review and apply the manufacturing bill of materials to each sales order to ensure accurate material usage and setup.
  • Prepare raw materials by planning and performing any required drying, pre-blending, or staging activities.
  • Prepare machines and related equipment by planning and completing all necessary setup tasks before production.
  • Thoroughly clean all equipment, including upstream and downstream components, in accordance with work instructions and any special instructions on the production schedule.
  • Set extruder operating parameters according to the manufacturing master reference set-up sheet.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate production run sheet records throughout each job.
  • Monitor and adjust operating parameters during the production run to achieve maximum extruder performance and consistent product quality.
  • Maintain a clean working environment by regularly removing manufacturing debris from floors and machine surfaces and by cleaning work areas to prevent build-up of manufacturing residue.
  • Take immediate action to prevent and correct unsafe operating conditions and address any situation that could lead to injury.
  • Operate as a collaborative team member, assisting coworkers across the facility to meet or exceed customer expectations.
  • Help minimize interpersonal conflicts by communicating effectively and supporting a positive team environment.
  • Perform general production, inspection, and machine operating tasks as needed to support overall manufacturing output.

Work Environment

This role is based on the manufacturing floor in a smaller, very clean facility, working closely with extrusion operators and the maintenance team. The shift is a front-end nights schedule, Monday through Wednesday, from approximately 5:40 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. The environment includes regular exposure to fumes or airborne particles, occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts and vibration, and normal exposure to moderate noise levels consistent with a manufacturing setting. The position is physically demanding, requiring frequent standing, walking, lifting up to 75 pounds, and performing tasks such as reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, and kneeling. Employees use extrusion machinery, upstream and downstream equipment, hand tools, and computer-based batching and training systems.
