Batch Engineer information

What is a batch engineer?

Batch engineers are professionals who design, implement, and optimize batch processing systems in manufacturing environments, particularly in industries like pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and food production. They are responsible for developing processes that produce products in discrete quantities or 'batches,' ensuring quality, efficiency, and safety standards are met. Batch engineers often work with automation systems, troubleshoot process issues, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve production workflows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a batch engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Batch Engineer, you need a strong background in chemical or process engineering, with experience in batch processing operations and often a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with Distributed Control Systems (DCS), batch automation software like DeltaV or Siemens PCS 7, and knowledge of industry standards such as ISA-88 are typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in optimizing processes and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring efficient, safe, and compliant batch production in manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges a batch engineer may face when managing large-scale batch processing systems?

Batch Engineers often encounter challenges such as optimizing job scheduling to maximize resource utilization while minimizing processing time. Handling job failures and troubleshooting data inconsistencies are also frequent issues, as large-scale systems can be sensitive to small errors. Additionally, they must ensure that batch jobs integrate smoothly with upstream and downstream systems, requiring strong communication with development, operations, and data teams. Staying updated with automation tools and best practices is crucial for efficiently managing these complex workflows.

What is the difference between Batch Engineer vs Process Engineer?

AspectBatch EngineerProcess Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Chemical, Mechanical, or Industrial EngineeringBachelor's in Chemical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, chemical facilities, pharmaceutical productionManufacturing plants, chemical facilities, process optimization settings
Industry UsageFood, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, manufacturingChemical, petrochemical, manufacturing, process industries
Primary FocusDesign, operation, and optimization of batch production processesDesign and improvement of continuous or batch processes for efficiency

Both Batch Engineers and Process Engineers work in manufacturing and chemical industries, often sharing similar educational backgrounds. Batch Engineers focus on managing and optimizing batch production processes, while Process Engineers work on designing and improving overall manufacturing processes. Understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right career path or job role.

Job description

Syensqo is all about chemistry. We're not just referring to chemical reactions here, but also to the magic that occurs when the brightest minds get to work together. This is where our true strength lies. In you. In your future colleagues and in all your differences. And of course, in your ideas to improve lives while preserving our planet's beauty for the generations to come.

We are looking for:

Syensqo is seeking a Process Control Engineer/specialist to provide ongoing support for our DCS-controlled chemical manufacturing facility in Niagara Falls, Canada. This on-site role is responsible for the administration, programming, and maintenance of Emerson Delta V and Moore APACS systems in a mixed-mode (batch and continuous) operation.

The ideal candidate will have proven experience collaborating with Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering teams to leverage control system technologies for enhanced process safety and operational efficiency.

The Process Control Engineer/specilist is responsible for designing, installing, maintaining, and supporting process control logic within the batch chemical manufacturing facility.

We Count on you to:

  • Provide ongoing support for the installed Emerson Delta V system and manage future expansions.

  • Schedule and oversee system maintenance activities performed by contractors.

  • Assign and maintain documentation for I/O connections and system interfaces.

  • Ensure proper system backups and maintain all related documentation.

  • Collaborate with Maintenance and Operations teams to troubleshoot issues identified by Delta V.
  • Learn and understand current process executions, propose automation opportunities, and lead the implementation and start-up of new recipes-including those required for new product introductions.

  • Work with Operations Engineers to review, modify, and optimize existing sequential programming (recipes) to improve yield, reduce cycle time, and minimize interruptions or program stalls.

  • Lead process control improvement projects, managing schedules, budgets, testing (Factory Acceptance Test [FAT], Site Acceptance Test [SAT]), start-up activities, and all required documentation and approvals.

  • Coordinate the integration of additional process control elements into the Delta V platform.

  • Assist in the administration and support of the site's OSI/PI historian system.

You will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering discipline (Chemical or Electrical preferred). Registration as a Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario, or eligibility for registration, is required.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of direct experience in industrial chemical plant operations, with broad exposure to production, engineering, and unionized maintenance and operations personnel.

  • Experience must be in facilities operating to world-class standards in process safety, digital instrumentation and control, and safety, health, and environmental practices-especially as they relate to maintenance activities and contractor management.

  • Demonstrated expertise in using Emerson DeltaV process control systems in both batch and continuous manufacturing environments.

  • Working knowledge of process historian systems is required; direct experience with OSI/PI process historian systems is highly desirable.

  • Proven ability to work with both hardware and software systems to support unit operations, including collaboration with vendors and contractors to ensure proper system development and installation.

  • Solid understanding of electrical systems compliant with Section 18 of the Canadian Electrical Code (installations in hazardous areas) and the ISA S88 Batch Process Control Standard.

  • Familiarity with communication system platforms such as EthernetIP, DeviceNet, and Modbus.

  • Experience with three-phase AC motors and industrial motor controls, including variable frequency drives.

  • Demonstrated track record in executing projects involving new or replacement control systems, process instrumentation, human-machine interfaces, and process data networks.

  • Strong verbal and technical writing skills, with the ability to communicate control system changes to Operations and to complete management of change and training documentation for assigned projects.

You will get:

  • Competitive salary and benefits
  • The Canadian annual base salary range reasonably expected to be paid for this new hire is: $92,000 to $115,000.  Actual compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors unique to each candidate, such as skills, experience, qualifications, etc. and can ultimately be more or less than the posted salary range. Total compensation for this role also includes bonus and/or other incentives
  • 16, or more, weeks of maternity/paternity and co-parenting leave, according to local regulations
  • Training platform for all employees
  • Free well-being sessions (physical and psychological)
