If you answered yes, we encourage you to consider a career with the City of Bastrop Police Department. Bastrop Police Department is actively recruiting for the position of Civilian Police Cadet.
As a Civilian Cadet with the Department, incumbents must successfully complete all training academy requirements and subsequently pass the State Peace Officers Exam. During the entirety of the training academy, a cadet will develop knowledge and proficiency in many areas, that include but are not limited to the interpretation of State, Federal and local laws and City ordinances.
In addition to laws and ordinances, cadets are responsible for learning police department policies, procedures, and regulations. Cadets must develop skills and proficiency in the use and care of firearms, emergency vehicle operation, and successfully pass the fitness exam. Upon graduating from the academy, Cadets become commissioned police officers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Attends classes and maintains comprehensive notebooks.
  • Participates in physical, firearms, and defensive tactics training programs, and practical application problem solving; actively participates in classroom discussions and group projects.
  • Complies with the established City of Bastrop Employee Handbook, the Bastrop Police Department General Orders, and all other rules, regulations and procedures as adopted by the Department.

MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Attends police in-service training, as required.
  • May be assigned to field-training officers to observe patrol operations.
  • Cleans and properly maintains assigned vehicle and equipment.
  • Performs related work as directed.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age upon graduating from the Police Academy.
  • Meet Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Peace Officer requirements.
  • Pass medical, psychological exams, physical fitness, and any other testing requirements.
  • Pass a thorough background investigation.
  • Successfully complete a 1-year probationary period.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction.
  • Agrees to the terms and conditions as stated in the Memorandum of Understanding Related to Peace Officer Recruiting and Commitment to Serve for Peace Officers within the City of Bastrop Police Department.
  • Possess a Valid Texas Class "C" Driver License or higher with an acceptable driving record.
  • Good communication skills and strong computer skills.

SUPERVISION:
  • While attending the academy Cadets are under the direct supervision of academy staff and instructors.
  • At the Bastrop Police Department, cadets are under the direct supervision of the Assistant Chief of Police.

MISCELLANEOUS:
Uniforms and/or personal protection equipment (furnished).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to work holidays, weekends, or after hours for special events, meetings or during emergency situations as required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
  • May work in all weather conditions including extreme temperatures.
  • May work around strong odors, smoke from fires, strong and/or toxic chemical fumes, dust, or pollen.
  • May work in and/or around standard office conditions.
  • May work around biohazards.
