How to start a basic video editing career for beginners?

To start a basic video editing career, beginners should learn fundamental editing skills using software like Adobe Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, and build a portfolio of sample projects. Gaining familiarity with video formats, storytelling, and basic color correction is essential, and obtaining certifications or tutorials can improve job prospects. Entry-level roles often require a strong attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

While both roles require foundational editing skills, Video Editing demands more experience and technical knowledge.

What is basic video editing?

Basic video editing involves simple tasks such as trimming, cutting, and arranging video clips, adding transitions, inserting text or titles, and adjusting audio levels. It is typically done using beginner-friendly software, allowing users to create polished videos without advanced technical skills. Basic editing is suitable for personal projects, social media posts, and small business content, and serves as a foundation for learning more complex video production techniques.

What are some common challenges faced by individuals in basic video editing roles, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in basic video editing roles is managing tight deadlines while ensuring video quality and accuracy. Editors often need to balance multiple projects, follow client or team guidelines, and make quick edits based on feedback. Staying organized, maintaining clear communication with team members, and using project management tools can help streamline workflow and reduce stress. Additionally, continuously improving technical skills and keeping up with software updates are important for efficiency and delivering polished results.

Are basic video editors still in demand?

Basic video editors are still in demand as businesses and content creators seek affordable editing services for social media, marketing, and online content. Proficiency with editing tools like Adobe Premiere or Final Cut, along with a good understanding of storytelling, can enhance job prospects in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a basic video editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Basic Video Editor, proficiency in video editing fundamentals, an understanding of visual storytelling, and basic knowledge of file formats are essential, often supported by a portfolio of completed projects. Familiarity with entry-level editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, iMovie, or DaVinci Resolve is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and the ability to accept and implement feedback help editors stand out in this role. These skills ensure efficient production of visually appealing content that meets project goals and deadlines.

Job description

ABOUT NEXVEL

Since 2014, Nexvel has helped local businesses - home services companies, healthcare organizations, franchises, professional service firms, and growing regional brands - compete in a tech-driven world. Our mission is to bring the big-brand experience to local brands.

Today we're building a new kind of agency model: combining a decade of local business marketing expertise with AI-assisted workflows, automation, and modern client success systems. We're looking for social media specialist who can help us deliver that experience at a higher level.

THE ROLE

Nexvel is seeking a part-time Social Media Specialist who understands both the art and science of social media specializing in organic content. Bonus if you have paid social experience (boosting, paid Meta Ads)ย

This is a hands-on role for someone who can identify what makes content engaging, capture compelling social-first content, create polished organic posts, edit short-form video, and consistently publish content across multiple client accounts.

You will support a portfolio of local businesses across platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and LinkedIn. The right candidate understands current platform trends, knows how to adapt content for different audiences and brands, and can manage the day-to-day execution required to keep client social channels active, relevant, and effective.

RESPONSBILITIES
  • Develop monthly content calendars and post concepts aligned with each client's brand, audience, and marketing priorities.
  • 10% travel to client locations throughout Philadelphia, Bucks County, Montgomery County, and surrounding areas to capture social-first video and photography.
  • Create branded graphics, carousels, stories, and other organic social content using Canva.
  • Edit Reels, TikToks and other short-form videos using CapCut, in-platform editing tools, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva or similar software.
  • Write engaging captions and adapt messaging across different industries, audiences, and brand voices.
  • Schedule, publish, and quality-check content across multiple social platforms using tools such as SocialPilot, Hootsuite, Sprout Social, Sprinklr, Meta Business Suite, or similar platforms.
  • Stay current on social media trends, content formats, platform updates, trending audio, and audience behavior.
  • Review automated social media reports and basic performance metrics, including reach, engagement, video views, watch time, audience growth, and top-performing content.
  • Use performance insights to improve future content concepts, formats, posting schedules, and creative execution.
  • Partner with Nexvel's account lead to gather client input, manage content approvals, and ensure content aligns with broader marketing priorities.
  • Use AI tools to support research, ideation, caption development, content repurposing, workflow efficiency, and quality control while maintaining human oversight and brand accuracy.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONSRequired
  • 2 to 3 years of professional social media experience within an agency, or in-house client side marketing team.
  • Agency experience or experience supporting multiple brands or accounts is strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, and YouTube, including platform-specific content formats and best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to create engaging organic social media content.
  • Proficiency in Canva and CapCut is required.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, in-platform editing tools, or similar creative software is preferred.
  • Experience using social media scheduling and publishing platforms such as SocialPilot, Hootsuite, Sprout Social, Sprinklr, Later, Meta Business Suite, or similar tools.
  • Ability to capture high-quality, social-first video and photography using a smartphone and lightweight production equipment.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, including the ability to adapt captions and messaging across different industries and brand voices.
  • Understanding of basic social media metrics and how to use performance insights to improve future content.
  • Familiarity with AI tools and their practical applications in social media content creation and workflow management.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple client calendars, deadlines, assets, and approval processes.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Willingness to travel to client locations for scheduled content shoots.
  • Reliable transportation is required.
  • Experience with home service businesses and running Meta ads is a plus.
