Under the general direction of the Assistant Parks, Recreation and Aquatics Director, prepare and maintain City recreational fields to ensure sporting events run smoothly and are in compliance with established guidelines, rules and regulations as well as assist with general groundskeeping duties within City Parks, trails and open spaces. Key responsibilities include; preparing baseball fields for practices and games, daily maintenance of parks and trails, working as a part of a team and providing excellent customer service. ย The work requires the safe operation of hand, power and automotive equipment to avoid injuries to the employee, other employees, the public and damage to City equipment, facilities and structures. Duties require interacting with the public respectfully and professionally. Work is performed outdoors in various weather conditions or inside depending on the assignment and the season of the year. Physical strength, agility, eye/hand coordination, normal vision and depth perception are required to perform duties. ย Must maintain flexibility and be available to meet with supervisory staff as required. Hours may vary; typically 40 hours/week. ย Scheduling flexibility is required; shifts will include weekends and occasional evenings.

Job Description

  • Prepare and maintain City recreational fields to ensure sporting events run smoothly and comply with established guidelines, rules and regulations
  • Drag, rake, chalk, line and set bases for recreational fields as necessary
  • Daily general maintenance of parks, trails and facilities
  • Clean and maintain restroom and picnic shelter complexes
  • Gather and dispose of litter
  • Operate hand, power and automotive equipment while exercising safety precautions to avoid obstacles and people
  • Operate various tools including, but not limited to, shovel, rake, weed eater, mower, blower, specialized baseball equipment
  • Assist in preparing facilities and setting up and taking down equipment for department programs and events
  • Provide assistance and support to other Parks maintenance staff as needed
  • Inspect fields, facilities and equipment after events to identify and assess damage; notify supervisor of property damage; prepare related records.
  • Communicate with City personnel, outside agencies and members of the community to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns
  • Communicate feedback between participants and supervisor
  • Answers public questions regarding facilities
  • Perform maintenance of equipment, supplies, and facilities and other custodial duties
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable City, County and State laws and City ordinances, policies and procedures at all times
  • Assist patrons when needed
  • Maintain proper storage and upkeep of equipment
  • Attends all staff meetings as required
  • Wears proper safety equipment necessary for the job
  • Contributes to a positive team environment

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Working knowledge of common grounds keeping tools
  • Previous grounds and recreational fieldwork is desirable
  • Must be at least 18 years old at time of hire.
  • Must be willing to perform physical duties of position; preparing and maintaining City recreational facilities.

Knowledge of:

  • General First Aid
  • Legal and defensive driving practices
  • Operation of handheld data recording devices and computers to update records and record work production
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy

  • Perform athletic field maintenance and equipment operation
