What is a baseball data analyst?

Baseball data analysts are professionals who collect, process, and interpret data related to baseball games and players. They use statistical techniques and software tools to evaluate player performance, develop strategies, and support decision-making for teams and coaches. Their work often involves advanced analytics, including sabermetrics, to gain insights that traditional scouting might miss. Baseball data analysts play a crucial role in modern baseball organizations, helping teams gain competitive advantages through data-driven approaches.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a baseball data analyst?

To thrive as a Baseball Data Analyst, you need strong statistical analysis skills, proficiency in sports analytics, and typically a degree in statistics, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with technical tools such as SQL, R, Python, and data visualization platforms, along with experience using baseball-specific databases like Statcast, is essential. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication are standout soft skills for interpreting and presenting complex data to coaches and executives. These skills are crucial for delivering actionable insights that improve team performance and inform strategic decision-making.

How does a baseball data analyst typically collaborate with coaches and players to drive on-field performance improvements?

Baseball Data Analysts often work closely with coaches and players by translating complex statistical findings into actionable insights. They attend team meetings, provide scouting reports, and help tailor training plans based on data-driven evaluations. Analysts may also prepare visualizations or summaries that make advanced metrics accessible for non-technical staff, ensuring everyone understands how data can inform strategy and player development. This collaborative environment fosters a culture of continuous improvement and evidence-based decision-making.

  • Maintain alignment with the broader THETEAM brand while establishing a distinctive visual approach for the baseball account

  • Partner closely with internal teams to align creative with strategic, audience and client goals

  • Apply feedback efficiently while upholding a high standard of design

Workflow & Project Management

  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced and often reactive sports environment

  • Stay organized using project management tools, including Asana, and maintain clear communication across teams

  • Plan proactively for major baseball moments, including the MLB Draft, free agency, Spring Training, the regular season, postseason and the World Series

  • Continuously explore design trends, tools, platform behaviors and cultural moments to keep creative fresh and relevant

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

  • 2+ years of experience in graphic design, preferably within an agency, brand or sports/entertainment environment

  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, Marketing or a related field

  • Strong portfolio showcasing digital, social and brand design work

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, and familiarity with motion tools such as After Effects and Premiere Pro

  • Experience designing for social platforms, with an understanding of best practices across Instagram, TikTok and emerging channels

  • Ability to translate data, research and sports information into visually compelling, easy-to-understand graphics and layouts

  • Strong understanding of typography, layout, color and visual storytelling

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality execution

  • High standard of excellence, with the flexibility to work nontraditional hours when needed and anticipate challenges with thoughtful communication
