Department: Community & Foundation
Reports to: Director, Astros Youth Academy & Youth Initiatives
Classification: Part-time/Non-exempt/Seasonal
Summary/Objective:
Responsible for teaching the Academy's baseball/softball offensive and defensive skill development. Training in the areas of hitting, pitching, fielding, base running and game knowledge.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Monitor and teach baseball and softball skills at the Academy to insure consistency of basic baseball/softball offensive and defensive fundamentals at all levels.
  • Teach all fundamentals identical to MLB standards.
  • Assist the manager and staff in the selection of players for appropriate Academy teams.
  • Coach teams as needed.
  • Lead and/or assist instruction at camps, batting practices, non-profit activations and clinics as assigned.
  • Lead and/or assist at all events assigned at Minute Maid Park including batting practices and client engagement events.
  • Support the YA's marketing efforts and outreach by participating in various public events, speaking engagements and other outreach or promotional programs and events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience & Skills:
  • Experience as a professional player, graduated college player/student, experience as a college/high school baseball or softball coach.
  • Organized, efficient and consistent positive communication skills
  • Team player and ready to take direction
  • Solid organizational and scheduling skills
  • Ability to organize baseball and softball practices
  • Able to instruct all facets of baseball and softball

Work Environment
The noise level in the work environment is moderate, however, during events, the noise level may be loud. The employee will be expected to work both indoors and outdoors, often in varying weather patterns (extreme heat or cold, rain, etc.).
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and focused vision. Ability to regularly work on your feet for long hours. The Position requires ability to walk long distances and stand up 4 to 5 hours without a break. The ability to lift up to 25 pounds on occasion.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a part-time position. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including; extended hours, evenings, weekends and holidays.

No travel is expected for this position.
