Bas Controls Engineer information

What is a BAS controls engineer?

BAS Controls Engineers are professionals who design, program, install, and maintain Building Automation Systems (BAS) in commercial and industrial facilities. These systems control and monitor mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems such as HVAC, lighting, security, and energy management. BAS Controls Engineers work to improve building efficiency, occupant comfort, and energy savings by ensuring that all automated systems function correctly and optimally.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BAS controls engineer?

To thrive as a BAS Controls Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, HVAC systems, and control logic, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with building automation systems such as Siemens, Johnson Controls, or Tridium, as well as experience with programming languages like BACnet or Modbus, is typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills make a candidate stand out. These skills ensure reliable system integration, efficient building operations, and effective collaboration with project stakeholders.

What are some common challenges faced by BAS controls engineers when integrating new systems into existing building automation infrastructures?

BAS Controls Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new automation systems with legacy equipment and software. Compatibility issues, outdated protocols, and insufficient documentation for older components can complicate the process. Successful integration typically requires thorough site assessments, creative problem-solving, and close collaboration with facility managers and other engineering teams to ensure seamless operation and minimal downtime. Staying updated on industry standards and emerging technologies also helps mitigate these challenges.

What is the difference between Bas Controls Engineer vs Controls Technician?

AspectBas Controls EngineerControls Technician
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or control engineeringOften has an associate degree or technical certification in controls or electronics
Work EnvironmentDesign, develop, and oversee control systems in industrial or building automation projectsInstall, troubleshoot, and maintain control systems and equipment on-site
Industry UsageUsed in building automation, manufacturing, and industrial facilitiesCommonly employed in maintenance and field service roles within similar industries

While both roles work with control systems, the Bas Controls Engineer focuses on design and development, whereas the Controls Technician handles installation and maintenance. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

This is an ongoing contractual engagement with a US-based company and is not limited to a single project. The role involves continuous collaboration across multiple mission-critical data center projects based on business needs.

You will provide engineering services as an independent, self-employed professional under a formal independent contractor agreement.

How to Apply:

Interested candidates should submit their resume in English, highlighting their relevant controls engineering experience.

Role Summary:

As a Controls Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, development, and coordination of Building Automation and Control Systems (BAS/BMS) for hyperscale and AI data center projects. Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will develop control system designs, sequences of operation, points lists, control schematics, and technical documentation while ensuring compliance with project requirements and applicable Canadian and international standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design Building Automation Systems (BAS/BMS) and DDC control systems for mission-critical facilities.
  • Develop control philosophies, sequences of operation, points lists, and network architecture.
  • Prepare and review control system drawings, wiring diagrams, control schematics, and technical specifications.
  • Coordinate controls engineering with mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and commissioning teams.
  • Support the integration of HVAC systems, electrical monitoring, and other building systems.
  • Review contractor submittals, RFIs, and technical documentation.
  • Provide engineering support during construction, commissioning, and project closeout.
  • Ensure designs comply with project standards, Canadian codes, and applicable industry best practices.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary design reviews and contribute to continuous quality improvement.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Building Automation Systems (BAS), Building Management Systems (BMS), or industrial/process controls engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of DDC control systems and HVAC control strategies.
  • Experience developing control sequences, points databases, and system architecture.
  • Familiarity with major BAS platforms such as Siemens, Johnson Controls, Schneider Electric, Honeywell, Delta Controls, or Tridium Niagara.
  • Working knowledge of communication protocols including BACnet, Modbus, and Ethernet/IP.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering projects.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration in Canada is considered an asset.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Why Join Us?
