What is a bartender helper?

Bartender Helpers, sometimes called barbacks, are support staff who assist bartenders in maintaining the bar’s cleanliness, restocking supplies, and ensuring the bar runs smoothly. Their tasks often include washing glasses, refilling ice bins, restocking liquor and garnishes, and helping with basic cleaning. While they do not usually interact directly with customers or prepare complex drinks, their support is essential for efficient bar operations. This entry-level role is a great way to gain experience and knowledge for those interested in becoming bartenders in the future.

What are the daily responsibilities of a bartender helper?

Bartender Helpers play a crucial role in keeping the bar running smoothly by assisting bartenders with routine tasks such as restocking supplies, cleaning glassware, preparing garnishes, and maintaining a tidy work area. They help ensure that bartenders can focus on serving customers efficiently, especially during busy shifts. Bartender Helpers may also collect and wash used glasses, dispose of trash, and occasionally assist with basic drink preparation under supervision. Their support enables the entire bar team to provide excellent customer service and maintain a welcoming atmosphere.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a bartender helper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bartender Helper, you need basic knowledge of bar operations, safe food and beverage handling, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, dishwashing equipment, and adherence to local alcohol service regulations is typically required. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently under pressure help you stand out in this support role. These skills ensure smooth bar operations, customer satisfaction, and compliance with safety and legal standards.

Job description

Shindigs is where great food, cold drinks, live music, and good times come together — and behind every great bartender is a great barback helping keep the bar moving.

We’re looking for an energetic, dependable Barback who thrives in a fast-paced environment and isn’t afraid to hustle. This is a hands-on position for someone who notices what needs to be done, stays one step ahead of the bartenders, and takes pride in keeping the bar stocked, clean, and ready for whatever the night brings.

If you like staying busy, working as part of a team, and being right in the middle of the action, we’d love to meet you.

What You’ll Do

  • Keep bartenders stocked with liquor, beer, wine, mixers, garnishes, ice, glassware, and other supplies throughout service
  • Restock beer coolers, wells, back bar, and service areas before items run out
  • Refill ice bins and maintain backup ice during high-volume shifts
  • Change kegs and assist with maintaining draft beer service
  • Collect, wash, polish, and restock glassware
  • Keep bar tops, wells, sinks, coolers, floors, storage areas, and service stations clean and organized
  • Remove trash, empty bottles, cardboard, and other waste throughout the shift
  • Prepare garnishes, mixers, and other bar-prep items as assigned
  • Help bartenders set up the bar before service and complete closing and breakdown responsibilities at the end of the night
  • Assist with receiving, rotating, and organizing bar inventory
  • Communicate with bartenders and managers to anticipate what the bar needs before it becomes a problem
  • Assist with guest service and alcohol service only when properly trained, certified, and assigned
  • Jump in wherever needed during busy weekends, live music, and special events
  • Help maintain a clean, safe, professional, and energetic Shindigs atmosphere

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong work ethic and a genuine sense of urgency
  • Ability to stay productive without needing constant direction
  • Dependable, punctual, and ready to work as part of a team
  • Comfortable working in a loud, busy, fast-paced bar and live-music environment
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and recognize what needs attention first
  • Willingness to clean, stock, lift, carry, and handle the behind-the-scenes work that keeps a busy bar running
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and perform the physical duties of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Previous restaurant, barback, busser, or other hospitality experience is preferred, but not required
  • Must obtain and maintain any food-handler and responsible beverage service certifications required for assigned duties
  • Friday and Saturday evening and late-night availability is strongly preferred

Why Work at Shindigs?

  • Flexible scheduling
  • Tip-share earning opportunities
  • Fun, high-energy team environment
  • Restaurant, bar, live music, and nightlife atmosphere
  • Hands-on opportunity to learn how a high-volume bar operates
  • Opportunity to develop your skills and potentially grow into additional Front of House positions
  • Employee discounts and perks
  • Be part of a growing local Riverside restaurant and entertainment venue

Ready to Get Behind the Bar?

If you’re dependable, like staying busy, and understand that great teamwork is what keeps a packed bar running, we want to meet you.

Apply today and come keep the bar moving at Shindigs.
